Today we are continuing our series on the Beatitudes
Last week, I heard that Cameron did an awesome job, Unfortunately I was unable to hear him
He taught on what it means to be “Poor In Spirit”
What is the general idea of someone who is poor in spirit?
Yeah, it is someone who is humbled and realizes that they are spiritually bankrupt before God
Throughout Christ’s ministry here on earth, Christ goes around making a ton of super crazy statements.
He is dropping mind bombs and moral bombs everywhere he goes.
Then he gets to the CHAPTER 5 with the beatitudes:
Here Christ is talking about the attitudes that true disciples have
Today we get to the second attitude in the list which is: “Blessed are those who mourn” v4
You may have already noticed the title of my message: “Don’t worry be sad”
Just a heads up, this passage is going to be a bit sad
BUT we are not staying sad
POINT 1: THis is my first point
sad there is an incredible encouragement at the end of this verse but first we must drudge through the sadness
The sad
there is an incredible encouragement at the end of this verse but first we must experience this “mourning” that Christ talks about
Studying this passage was incredibly convicting for me, I saw that I don’t always mourn this way
After studying this passage, I actually believe it is good for believers to spend time in sadness or “mourning”
5 years ago, my grandfather passed away
It was a huge shock, none of us saw it coming
He looked completely healthy, until one day he was having some stomach issues
We took him into the hospital to see what was wrong
He never left that hospital
Two weeks later, he died of kidney failure
The day he died all my family was in the hospital bawling our eyes out
Amongst the crying, one person stood out trying to comfort and encourage everyone
My grandma....
I have always been wondering how a person who just loses her husband/best friend of 40+years is able to comfort other people
After studying this passage. I have a better understanding of how she did it.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew

1.) Happy are the sad
1.) Happy are the sad
Here is one of those crazy statements that Jesus makes
“Blessed/Happy” are the sad, or those who mourn.
To understand what Jesus is trying to tell us here we have to understand the terms in use
What does it mean to mourn?
[ASK THE STUDENTS]
There are many types of mourning or sorrow:
The Good mourning:
Mourning a death
Even Jesus mourned the death of Lazarus
Mourning for your own tough circumstances
Many of the psalms are Davids laments
Mourning for the circumstances of others
The Bad mourning:
Mourning because of an inability to sin
Mourni
: Amnon could not sleep with his sister “He became ill”
This ridiculous, but we do it too when we get upset that we can’t have what we want
Mourning a death indefinitely
You can no longer function
There are many ways that we can mourn, but what was Jesus talking about here?
There is one kind of mourning that the bible talks about that stands out amongst the rest.
Turn to
“For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it—for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while— I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter.”
(
This is the godly sorrow an mourning that Jesus is talking about
This is the mourning of someone who is broken over their sin
Not just the fact that they sinned but because they recognize what that sin has done
Godly Mourning
Have you mourned over your sin?
Do you mourn for sin in general?
Studying this message was incredibly convicting for me
I do not mourn for sin as I should
I am not saddened by sin as much as I should be
My heart has been desensitized to a lot sin, and that is incredibly wrong
Celebrating Sin
Think about this....Can we celebrate sin without actually sinning?
We see this a lot with jokes
Whenever we enjoy inappropriate jokes
Jokes about abortion
Jokes about sex
Jokes about Homosexuality
Whenever we laugh
Jokes about the Holocaust
Jokes about Racism
The things we
What sin did
Think back to a time in which something you did caused someone else pain
How did it feel
Terrible right?!
I can think of a number of times that I said something mean to Christina that is caused her to cry, my heart was broken
The godly mourning that comes from sin is far worse:
My sin caused the person I love most in the world:
Caused the person I love most in the world to be whipped
To be whipped
To be beaten
To be spit on
To have the flesh off his back ripped off
To carry a giant hunk of wood humiliated through a city and up a hill
To be nailed to this hunk of wood
To be tortured on this hunk of wood
To die on this hunk of wood
And ultimately, to face hell on this hunk of wood
When I finally realized this, I broke down crying:
from this point I had a couple of choices
Ignore it
repent
This sorrow drove me to repentance
Jesus tells us that the person who mourns over their sin in this way is Blessed…Happy…Enviable
2.) Comforted are the sad
2.) Comforted are the sad
Jesus tells us that the person who mourns over their sin in this way is Blessed…Happy…Enviable
Why would you envy a dumb little 7th grader who is bawling his eyes out over sin?
Because of the promise that comes at the end of this verse
“Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.”
This comfort is one that only comes God
This comfort comes when someone recognize their sin, is broken over it, and repents
COMFORT COMES FROM GOD THROUGH THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS
Look back at 2 Corinthians 7:10:
“For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.” ()
This comfort comes when someone recognize their sin, is broken over it, and repents
The one who mourns:
Their whole lives are changed
They are given hope
They are given forgiveness
They are given the person whom they love more than anyone else in the world
The person whom they caused so much pain
“Oh the wrath of God that I deserve with every breath fell upon him, and he loved my heart to death”
We are released from the weight of guilt
We no longer have to pay for our sins
It is only those who experience this godly mourning that get to experience any of it.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy.” ()
I have every reason to be happy now
I have every reason to sing for joy
This is why I love leading worship so much
I get to gather with other people who have experienced this godly mourning and lead them in time of PRASIE to god
I have very reason to praise Christ
Blessed are those who mourn (Practical Application)
Why should you mourn over your sin? -> You will be comforted
Do you have guilt built up
Are you carrying around the weight of your sin?
Do you feel like it won’t ever go away
This godly mourning promises comfort
When life gets hard, We are comforted with Jesus
When a family member dies, We are comforted with Jesus
When we can’t get into the college we want, We are comforted with Jesus
When we fail that big exam, We are comforted with Jesus
When we get dumped by our girlfriend/boyfriend, We are comforted with Jesus
When we struggle with anxiety, and we feel like the world is falling apart around us, We are comforted with Jesus
Guys we need to be mourning over our sin or how can we ever experience this great gift of forgiveness and salvation
How do you mourn over your sin?
Look to the cross:
Open up to
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” ()
I want you to take this verse, and place your own sins in that verse:
“He made him who knew no sin, to be ${enter.sin.here}”
My anger
My pride
My lust
My selfishness
My lies
My evil thoughts
Get more specific:
“He made him who knew no sin, to be ${that one time I...}”
lied
lusted
looked at inappropriate images
thought those impure thoughts
If you love God this will bring you to your knees with mourning over your sin
DON’T STOP THERE

be comforted by the grace of God, by his forgiveness

Questions:
How strict should we be when it comes to celebrating sin, ie what should we allow ourselves to hear, watch, think about, laugh at about?
What are the biggest hinderances (distractions) in your life keeping you from mourning (over your sin)? How do we get rid of them?
Read , how does this demonstrate Godly mourning?
