This passage deals with the evidence on which people will be judged, not the cause of salvation or damnation.

Matthew 25:31–46 ESV
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

The works we do are the evidence either of the grace of God at work in us or of our rejection of that grace.54

Universal Judgment
Matthew 25:31-

1. Christ exercises supreme authority.

Matthew 25:31 ESV
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
Revelation 11:15 ESV
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
Rev
Every Knee will bow and every tong will confess.

2. Men will face divine accountability.

Matthew 25:31–32 ESV
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

Matt 25

We are absolutely accountable to Jesus Christ.
Matthew 16:27 ESV
27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
1 Peter 4:5 ESV
5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
1 Peter 4
This doesn’t mean that we are saved by our works.

We are saved by grace alone - through faith alone - in Christ alone.

3. Christians display their love of Christ through their activities.

This passage deals with the evidence on which people will be judged...The works we do are the evidence either of the grace of God at work in us or of our rejection of that grace. Leon Morris

a. Christians display their love of Christ through their activities.

Acts 9:4–5 ESV
4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 5 And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
When you serve them you serve Him.
Matthew 25:37–40 ESV
37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

When you serve them you serve Him.

When you serve them you serve Him.

b. Unbelievers display their indifference towards Christ through their apathy.

Matthew 25:44–45 ESV
44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’
Matt 25:

When you are indifferent towards them you are rejecting Him.

Matthew 10:40 ESV
40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
John 13:35 ESV
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
b. When you serve Christians you serve Christ.
When we serve them we are serving him.
b. People will know

eternal
eternal condemnation
