Jesus, The Light of the World

Pastor Keith Hassell

Foundation Scripture:   John 1:1-14; 3:16-21

I.       Jesus is the Light of the World

A.        John 8:12  “I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

B.        John 9:4-5  “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

            C.        John 1:4  “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

II.      Why did the Light come?

A.        John 12:46-48  “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.”

B.        John 11:9-10  “Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours in the day?  If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.  But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

C.        I John 1:5-7  “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.  If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

III.    One man’s encounter with the Light (Acts 26:12-18)

IV.     Our response to the Light

A.        John 3:19-21  “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil; For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

B.        John 12:35-36  “Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you.  Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you;  he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.  While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
