Introduction

Romans 8:1–11 NKJV
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
What a picture of the believer, who is safe in Christ!
Harry Ironside tells the story of a wagon train of pioneers crossing the prairie. One day they saw a long line of smoke in the distance. A raging prairie fire was headed toward them. Traveling in covered wagons pulled by oxen was a slow business, so there was no way to outrun the blaze. The river they crossed the day before was too far away for safety. One man gave the order to set fire to the grass behind them, when it had burned over they moved back onto the burned section. As the flames roared on toward them from the west, a little girl cried out in terror, "Are you sure we shall not all be burned up?" The leader replied, "My child, the flames cannot reach us here, for we are standing where the fire has been!" What a picture of the believer, who is safe in Christ! There is an old hymn called “Hail, Sovereign Love” and one verse says. "On Him Almighty vengeance fell, Which would have sunk a world to hell. He bore it for a chosen race, And thus becomes our Hiding Place." The fires of God's judgment burned themselves out on Him, and all who are in Christ are safe forever, for they are now standing where the fire has been. http://www.sermonillustrations.com/a-z/j/judgement.htm. That is the essence of this portion of . Those who trust in Jesus Christ do not perish.
This is the promise. Those who trust in Jesus Christ do not perish.
The promise of not perishing is conditioned upon belief in Jesus Christ.
This is the result of our response. Those who respond to Jesus Christ in faith, “shall not perish”.

“Perish” ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi)
Perish - ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi) destroy; perish; lose. To perish (spiritually) v. — to be or become without spiritual life under the condemnation of God. Finite verb, aorist, middle, subjunctive, third person, singular.

Perish” is the Greek word ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi) meaning destroy; perish; lose. To perish (spiritually), to be or become without spiritual life under the condemnation of God.

The grammatical voice that signifies that the subject of the verb is being affected by its own action or is acting upon itself.

John 3:17–19 NKJV
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
By believing in Jesus Christ we make it to where we will not perish. Our actions effect us!

Belief in Jesus Christ makes it to where we will not face the condemnation of God. The implication here is that those who do not believe, will be condemned. This is explicitly stated in vv. 17-19.
Never perish does not refer to never die. Unless Christ returns we all will die. However, when we die, we will not face condemnation. That is what is all about (S).
Romans 8:1
Romans 8:1 NKJV
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
This morning, as we examine this phrase, we are going to be both encouraged and challenged.
Encouragement is found in knowing that we will never face condemnation.
The removal of condemnation challenges us to live boldly for Jesus Christ.
This verse, , explains the motivation behind making not perishing an option, what has been done to provide the ability not to perish, and finally the conditional requirement for those desiring not to perish. First, the motivation…

1. Believers Shall Not Perish Because Of The Love Of God

We have already looked at this but I want to examine it in light of the ability not to perish. We must never lose sight of the reality that this is the motivating factor. The love of God is what has set the entire plan of salvation in motion! That is what this verse teaches us. God loved the world in this way, He gave His only begotten son. Through His Son we have life! makes this very clear (S).
Ephesians 2:4-5
Ephesians 2:4–5 NKJV
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
We must never lose sight of the reality that this is the motivating factor. The love of God is what has set all this in motion!
It is because of God’s great love! This love was extended to us even when we were dead in our sin! God reached down made us alive together with Christ! We are saved by grace! What this verse implies, the apostle John explicitly states in (S).
1 John 4:19
1 John 4:19 NKJV
We love Him because He first loved us.
Salvation is an experience of the love of God.
Think about that for a moment. Scripture is filled with passages that tell us of God’s love. But when we trust Jesus Christ as Savior, we get to experience it! Because of His love, we will not perish! This love is designed to be reciprocal. Do we return God’s love to Him? How can we be sure we do? Obedience. This is what Jesus told the disciples in (S).
Salvation is an experience of the love of God.
John 14:15
Because of His love, we will not perish! This love is designed to be reciprocal. Do we return God’s love to Him? How can we be sure we do? Obedience.
John 14:15 NKJV
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
Do we? Not perfectly. But is this what we strive for? takes this a step further (S).
(S). Is passed from death unto life.
1 John 3:14
1 John 3:14 NKJV
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.
Salvation is to make us love and obey God and that love should then flow out of us to others.
reveals that we will not perish. We will not face the wrath of God because God, in love, sent Jesus to face that wrath in our place. Sing with me …
Goodness of God leads us to repentance.
#67 “The Love Of God” (verses 1-2)
We will never perish, never face condemnation because of the love of God. That is the motivation. Now we want to consider what God did to provide a way for believers not to perish. In considering God’s provision we learn that…

2. Believers Shall Not Perish Because Of The Gift Of God

God’s love, because it was genuine love, prompted Him to act. And so He gave His only begotten Son. That’s what our verse says. Love is an action word and the action God took was to send Jesus to pay the penalty for sin. This sacrifice was prophesied in the OT. One of the clearest of these prophesies is found in . Would you turn there please?
,
Isaiah 53:4–6 NKJV
Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:10–11 NKJV
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
There is present in this prophecy descriptions of the Father’s activity in Christ’s suffering. The first place this is seen is in v. 4. This is our view of what God did with Christ. In our limited human understanding we look at the suffering and death of Christ and might conclude that God was punishing this man. What we do not understand is that this has been God’s plan from eternity past! Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world! And so in v. 5 we see that the father allowed Him to be wounded for our transgressions! Bruised for our iniquities! He was chastised so we could have peace and His stripes bring us healing! V. 6 declares that God laid our iniquity on Christ! Those wounds should have been mine! Those bruises should have marred my skin! That chastisement should have come on me and those strips should have been laid on my back! This is what purchased us. This is the condemnation that we deserved!
The gift of God is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ!
Sin has been paid for, simply believe! V. 10 states that the Lord was pleased to bruise Christ. The Father put the Son to grief. He offered Him for sin. In v. 11 God the Father sees the labor of Christ and is satisfied. John calls Christ “the propitiation of our sin”, this is the same idea. Christ satisfied the justice of God by taking the penalty that we deserved! Now the Father is able to declare us righteous based on the righteousness of Christ! He bore our iniquities!
Wounded for our transgressions.
This is God’s gift! This is what made it possible for us not to perish! Everything that we enjoy is because of Jesus Christ. Sing with me…
Lord laid on Him iniquity of us all. Pleased Lord to bruise Him.
Examine the gift of God - learn of me for I am meek and lowly
#213 “Because He Lives” (verse 1)
What true words. “Life is worth the living just because He lives.” Because of His love, God provided a way for us not to perish. This provision was the gift of His only begotten Son. The final thing revealed here is the condition. What must we do to not perish?

3. Believers Shall Not Perish Through Faith In Jesus Christ

The promise of not perishing is conditioned upon belief in Jesus Christ. This is the result of our response. Those who respond to Jesus Christ in faith, “shall not perish”. Belief in Jesus Christ makes it to where we will not face the condemnation of God. The implication here is that those who do not believe, will be condemned. This is explicitly stated in .
Again, there is an implication. If you do not believe in Jesus Christ, you will perish! You will face condemnation! What form does this condemnation take? Eternal separation from God in torment forever.
Examine the gift of God - learn of me for I am meek and lowly
John 3:17-19
John 3:17–19 NKJV
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
The phrases go together. There is a condition attached to the “should not perish” phrase. The condition is “whoever believes in Him”. Again, there is an implication. If you do not believe in Jesus Christ, you will perish! You will face condemnation! What form does this condemnation take? Eternal separation from God in torment forever. This is what the believer has been delivered from. This is what we find in (S).
Examine the gift of God - learn of me for I am meek and lowly
We have mentioned this already, but let’s hone in on this point.
Romans 5:9
John 5:24 NKJV
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Believe in the Son of God -
When we believe we will never come into judgement! We have experienced a change of position; from death, to life. supports that we will not face God’s wrath (S).
Romans 5:9 NKJV
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
Not only are we declared righteous, we are delivered from wrath! Through Jesus Christ we will never be subject to the wrath of God! presents our deliverance from wrath as an accomplished fact (S).
Saved from wrath through Him
1 Thessalonians 1:10
1 Thessalonians 1:10 NKJV
and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
Jesus delivers us from wrath. So what do we do to have this deliverance? How can we be confident that we “should not perish”? Consider 1 (S).
Consider 1 (S).
1 John 5:24
John 5:24 NKJV
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
When we believe In Jesus Christ we will never come into judgement! We have experienced a change of position; from death, to life. But this only comes through belief.
Deliverance comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
The question that is before us then is this, “have you trusted Him”? Do you believe that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again? Do you believe that He did this for you? Sing with me…
#326 “Softly And Tenderly” (verses 1-2)
Turn with me to . This is a time for believers to remember the price that was paid. To be reminded of the penalty of sin. Taking part of communion does not save you. This is simply a way for us to be reminded of what Christ has done. If you know the Lord as savior this morning, please join us in bread and juice as we remember Jesus Christ. These are only symbols, they represent the body and blood of our Savior. Examination – verses 26-32

OBSERVANCE OF COMMUNION

The Bread (His Body) vv. 23-24 “‘The Power Of The Cross” (Final Chorus Only)
The Cup (His Blood) v. 25 “Be Unto Your Name” (Chorus Only)

Conclusion

This is the promise for all who trust in Christ and are saved by grace through faith. We shall not perish! Though our bodies are fading and corrupting, our inward man is being renewed! When this body is gone, we will be with Christ and one day stand before Him in resurrected bodies! We read of this hope in
(S).
Job 19:25–27 NKJV
For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!
Paul reminds us in that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!
(in my flesh I will see God) Absent from this body is present with the Lord.
Today we are encouraged to know that…
Encouraged
There is no condemnation for the believer, just an expectation of future glory with Jesus Christ!
Our challenge is to…
Live boldly for Jesus Christ.
What does that look like? It looks like surrender. Living in obedience to Him. It looks like the giving of time and resources in His service. It looks like being unwilling to be silenced. It looks like witnessing for Christ. Living boldly for Jesus means that we have placed Him at the center and throne of our lives and everything else revolves around Him.
We can be bold because we will never face condemnation.
