John 8:35 NKJV
And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
John 8:31–36 NKJV
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Slave— a person who is legally owned by someone else and whose entire livelihood and purpose was determined by their master.Abide
Abide: stay (remain) — to stay put (in a certain place).
Free: to set free — to grant freedom to; cause to be free.
Free: to be free — no longer or not under the ownership, authority, or in the servitude of another.
Indeed: Really, truly — in accordance with truth or fact or reality.
Freedom is misunderstood
Hyper-grace
Legalism
Galatians 5:1 MEV
1 For freedom Christ freed us. Stand fast therefore and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
We were set free from sin AND the law
This is confusing to us because after we get saved we continue to sin
Is sin still sin after we get saved? - Yes
After we get saved are we supposed to try to live sinless lives? - No
Trick question “WE” aren’t supposed to try because that is keeping the law which is of the flesh as well.
After we get saved we are supposed to follow the spirit.
Galatians 5:16 NKJV
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Where will He lead us?
The Flesh cannot keep the Law
Only the Spirit can
We confuse keeping the law with holiness and righteousness
Keeping the law does not make you holy or righteous
Commiting sin DOES defile you.
1 John is telling us how to recognize that we are not in Him (walking in the spirit)
1 John 2:4–6 NKJV
4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
The understanding of all New Testament writing is that the readers are filled with the Spirit
This is good news!
You don’t have to live in bondage to sin - you simply have to walk in the Spirit
You don’t have to live in bondage to the law - you simply have to walk in the Spirit
We know how to recognize whether someone is walking in the Spirit on in the flesh from Galatians chapter 5
