INTRODUCTION:

1. Unity is what the church should be striving to obtain.

A. Jesus prayed for unity for those who were given Him by the Father.

John 17:11 NKJV
11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.

1. These whom the Father gave Jesus are the twelve apostles, and the one who was lost, or the son of perdition, is Judas Iscariot.

Jn 17.
Luke 6:12–16 NKJV
12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.
Lk 6.12-

A. Jesus said that He kept them all, except the son of perdition.

John 17.
John 17:12 NKJV
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

B. Jesus set them apart, or sanctified them by truth, to make them one as He and the Father are one.

John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

C. Jesus said, ‘The words I speak show that the Father and I are one.’

John 14:9–10 NKJV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.

D. After Jesus had taught the twelve His Word and sanctified them, or set them apart, He then sent them to teach so they could unify or set apart the rest of the world.

John 17:18–19 NKJV
18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
Jn 17
1. This happened first at the limited commission when Jesus sent the twelve to Isreal.
Matthew 10:5–6 NKJV
5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 10.1-
2. Then after the limited commission in Jesus later gave the great commission to send those who had been taught, or set apart by His Word, to teach others.
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
19-20

B. Jesus then prayed for all to be one, as He and the Father are one.

John 17:20–21 NKJV
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

1. Jesus was praying everyone who believed would be sanctified by the truth; this would mean that all should speak the same thing or be of the same mind.

1 Corinthians 1:10 NKJV
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Philippians 2:5 NKJV
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
Phil 2.
Philippians 2:2 NKJV
2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Philippians 4:2 NKJV
2 I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.
Romans 12:16 NKJV
16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

A. Christ was one with the Father, because He spoke exactly what the Father told Him to speak.

John 12:49–50 NKJV
49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”
1. Therefore, we are only one with Christ and have His mind in us when we speak only those things that Christ has told us to speak.
1 Peter 4:11 NKJV
11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
2. This is the only way to be one with Christ and have His mind in us.
Philippians 2:5 NKJV
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,

2. If you are not unified in truth, you are divided on a misconception.

BODY:

1. MISCONCEPTIONS LEAD TO DIVISION.

A. Division is a result of not being able to agree.

Amos 3:3 NKJV
3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

1. Do we really think God would leave His Word so vague that we cannot agree on it?

John 8:32 NKJV
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

2. Or are we the ones who make it vague with gray areas to be disagreed upon?

2 Peter 3:14–16 NKJV
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
2pt 3.14

2. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BIBLICAL AUTHORITY LEADING TO DIVISION.

A. It comes from my personal likes, dislikes, opinions, or what pleases me.

1. Let’s suppose you chose the place you are going to worship in this manner.

2. You walk into a church you are considering and sit down.

A. You start to look around and think, “I don’t like this or that,” without any consideration for God’s Word.

B. You then get up and walk out thinking, “This is not where I am going to attend” and next week, you do the same until you get to one you like.

C. You just divided God’s church based on your own opinion and completely ignored Christ’s plea for oneness of His people, based on His Word.

Romans 11:25 NKJV
25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

B. It comes from what is popular.

1. Let’s suppose you believe the popular doctrine of instrumental music in worship.

2. You refuse to worship where the biblical practice of singing without instrumental accompaniment is taking place and choose to attend where the practice of instrumental music is acceptable, ignoring the fact that there is nowhere in the New Testament where this practice is authorized.

Colossians 3:16 NKJV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:19 NKJV
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
Hebrews 13:15 NKJV
15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

3. You just divided the church on the basis of a popular belief and ignored Christ’s plea for oneness of His people, based on His Word.

Exodus 23:2 NKJV
2 You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.

C. It comes from my inability to “see any harm in it.”

1. Let’s suppose that you don’t see any harm in doing illegal drugs and say, “I mean I’m only harming myself.”

2. A member of the Lord’s church approaches you and explains that it is wrong. You take offense and you leave.

3. You just divided the church on the basis of your ability to see any harm in it and ignored Christ’s plea for the oneness of His people, based on His Word.

Isaiah 55:8–9 NKJV
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

D. It comes from long-standing practice.

1. Let’s suppose that you had a parent pass away and someone is trying to convince you of some error that was in your parents’ beliefs.

2. You then respond, “If it was good enough for my parents, then it is good enough for me,” and refuse to listen, basing your beliefs on the long-standing practices of your parents.

3. You just divided the church on your own stubbornness and once again, ignored Christ’s plea for the oneness of His people, based on His Word.

Acts 7:51 NKJV
51 You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
Acts 7:50 NKJV
50 Has My hand not made all these things?’
Isaiah 65:2 NKJV
2 I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, According to their own thoughts;
Exodus 32:9 NKJV
9 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!

E. It comes from my feelings.

1. Let’s suppose you say something like this— “I feel I am saved”

2. Someone then comes to you and tries to reason with you about salvation and you say, “I feel I am saved,” and refuse to listen to the proper biblical plan of salvation and decide to attend a place where this is acceptable.

3. You just divided the church on the basis of your own feelings, ignoring Christ’s plea for the oneness of His people, based on His Word.

Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Isaiah 65:2 NKJV
2 I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, According to their own thoughts;
I

CONCLUSION:

1. A belief of a misconception is division among God’s people.

A. Christ pleaded with His people to be unified on the basis of His Word.

B. Will you be unified with Christ and put away misconceptions?

1. When Christ comes back, it will be to get the people who are unified with Him.

Ephesians 4:4–6 NKJV
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Eph 4.

2. The ones who believed a lie (misconception) will be condemned to hell.

2 Thessalonians 2:11–12 NKJV
11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
