Not of this World

Pastor Keith Hassell

Foundation Scripture:   John 17:1-26

I.       Jesus Christ came to give us LIFE

          A.      LIFE is knowing God and His Son, Jesus Christ

II.      Jesus came to call out and sanctify (set apart) a people from the world

A.      World (Greek:  Probably from the base of G2865; orderly arrangement, that is, decoration; by implication the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively [morally]):—adorning, world.

          B.      World speaks of the order of things

                   1.       World of sports

                   2.       World of fashion

                   3.       World of politics

                   4.       World of music

                   5.       Marine world

                   6.       World of Banking

                   7.       World of Economics

                   8.       World of Finance

          C.      The kingdom of God has its own order

1.       Order of heaven:  love, righteousness, holiness, fear of the Lord, forgiveness, healing, restoration, authority, power, servant-hood

          D.      Christians are in this world but not of this world

III.    Christians must be prepared to live in this world but as from another world

A.      Astronauts must prepare to live in another environment or else they will not survive

B.      Deep sea divers must prepare to live in another world if they are to survive

IV.     How do we prepare to live in this world? (Scuba diving)

A.      We must recognize that Christians cannot be victorious in this world without making adjustments to the atmosphere of heaven

B.      We must make sure that the pressure on the inside is equal to the pressure coming at us on the outside.

a.       Biologists have discovered sea life at great depths beyond what they ever thought life could exist.  The reason is that these sea creatures had an internal pressure that was equal to the pressure they were under

b.       The same with submarines

c.       The same with deep sea divers

C.      We must maintain our joy (verse 13)

          a.       Joy keeps us strong inside even under adverse pressure.

D.      We must stay in His word (verse 14)

a.       The word will keep us from being trapped by the evil one (verse 15)

E.      We must build vital relationships with other believers (verse 21)

a.       Our spiritual strength is maintained through vital relationships with others

F.      We must walk in His glory (verse 22)

          a.       The glory is His LIFE manifested through our lives

G.      We must receive His love (verse 23)

          a.       His love is the assurance we need when the world rejects us

H.      We must walk in His presence (verse 24)

a.       His presence is the fellowship we enjoy daily.  He walks with us.  Moses told God that he did not want to go on without the Lord’s presence.

I.       We must exercise the power of His name (verse 26)

          a.       His name represents His authority and power over this world
