Foundation Scripture: Luke 21:19; 1 Thessalonians 4:4; Proverbs 25:28
I. We are called to possess our souls (psuche)
A. Minds (reasoning, thought life) 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
B. Will (decisions, submission, control) 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any
C. Emotions (feelings, awareness of physical sensations, fleshly impulses, anger, envy, jealousy, fear, etc.)
D. We will not be able to possess anything else in life if we are unable to possess these three areas of our life
E. Proverbs 25:28 ‘Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.”
II. Two things the Israelites were to possess
A. One: The land (territory) (Deuteronomy 1:8; 1:21)
B. Two: The gates of their enemies (Genesis 22:17; 24:60)
C. Hebrew word for “possess” means “to occupy by driving out previous tenants and occupying in their place)
D. Greek word for “possess” means “to get or acquire by any means.”
III. What does it mean to possess? (Deuteronomy 7:22-26)
A. The Lord will drive them out little by little
B. The Lord will deliver your enemy over to you
C. You will inflict defeat upon them until they are destroyed
D. He will deliver the kings into your hand and you will destroy their name from under heaven
E. No one will be able to stand against you until you destroy them
F. You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire
G. You shall not covet the gold or silver that is on them nor take it for yourselves lest you be snared by it
H. You shall not bring an abomination into your house lest you be doomed to destruction like it.
I. You shall utterly detest it and abhor it, for it is an accursed thing
IV. How do we possess our souls?
A. Through our patience (Luke 21:19)
1. “Patience” means “cheerful endurance, constancy”
2. Keep on until you win, the victory is sure to those who endure the battle, keep on fighting, and never give up
