By These Waters

Last week, I shared with you, the Heavens Declare. I wholeheartedly believe the Bible is the truth. God does not lie. When it says, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and spells out how He did it in 6 days, and rested on the seventh, that is exactly how He did it. I believe, like Moses, the people of Israel, David, the prophets, Jesus, and the apostles who all refer to God’s creation of the world in six days, the creation of a literal Adam and Eve, the flood and other events in Genesis that it is literally true. And, I believe, like the Psalmist who praised God saying, the Heavens declare the glory of God.

I know many of you already believe this as well. So, why last weeks sermon, and this weeks sermon on the Earth By These Waters?

Satan has long been at work attacking God’s word. In you find him questioning Eve about what God said. He seeks to cast doubt on God’s word, and to deny it is true. He is continuing that two-fold attack today

Sadly, many Christians are listening to these lies. Many Christians have been raised hearing about the billions of years. And many Christians have bought into this, believing when they are told that science has proven the universe to be 14.5 billion years old, and the Earth to be 4.6 billion years old. For these Christians, and many young people today who grow up in the church, Genesis cannot be true because ‘science’ has proven it wrong. Worse yet, many young people who grow up in the church today walk away after they graduate because they don’t really believe the bible can be trusted.

I am addressing this topic last week and this week because I believe this is a major concern for the church. You likely know young people or others who do not believe because ‘science’ has proven. Think of your children, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews, neighbors. They are all being taught day-in and out that they cannot trust the Bible. Science has proven...

My hope is that this church family will be strong in the faith. That this church family from the oldest to the youngest will know that the Heaven’s Declare the glory of God! That they and the Earth display his handiwork. That science has not proven billions of years. They have not disproven God’s account of how He created all of this. We need to be strong for those around us both within the church, and without.

Last week, I focused on the Heavens. I showed how there are flaws in the theories about the universe coming into being from a big bang 14.5 billion years ago. I shared with you the problem of the young faint sun, the problems with uniform temperatures throughout the universe, the problems with inflation, the graceful exit problem, the problem of stars forming from nebula, the problem of our moon’s change in orbit, and the problem of spinning galaxies with arms. These problems should be enough to say we need a new theory. These problems do not exist when we listen to God’s account. The evidences from what we observe in this universe does support what God says about creating the heavens and the earth. They do declare His glory if we will listen!

This week, I will be focusing on the Earth.

We just finished our study of 1 Peter. Peter wrote a second letter, and in that letter he warns of people who will deny the Lord. Let’s read together.

2 Peter 3:3–7 NIV

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Scientists recognize that water is crucial for life. That is why there is a constant search for water on Mars and other distant planets.

Water not only makes up a large portion of our bodies, is necessary for waste removal, and transport of nutrients in plants, among many others purposes. Water in liquid form is necessary for balancing temperature on this planet.

Water has a high heat capacity, meaning it takes a lot of heat to raise its temperature. Planets without water suffer huge temperature swings like on Mars where temperatures can change as much as 180°F.

Where did water come from on Earth?

Secular scientists generally believe the earth started as molten rock which cooled. So, where did water, which is crucial for life come from?

They used to teach that oceans came from meteorites (we discussed them last week, they are ice) colliding with the Earth.

Scientists are now making new discoveries where water can from from combinations of Hydrogen and Silicon in the Earth’s mantle, specifically quartz. They have come up with computer models where hydrogen and quartz react unter pressure with extreme heat to form water.

They also found that much of the water stays in the quartz under high pressure, which can be released and cause earthquakes deep under ground. Lydia Hallis at the University of Glasgow says this “study highlights how the minerals that make up the Earth’s mantle can incorporate large amounts of water, and how Earth is probably ‘wet’ in some sense all the way down to its core.”

This is confirmed in diamonds which have been found from deep in the Earth that have water in them. Some scientists back in 2014 suggest that huge reservoirs of water up to many times the volume of our oceans lie deep below the Earth’s surface.

Back in 1997 Lou Bergeron wrote “Deep Waters,” in the New Scientist and claimed that there may be enough water to replace the surface oceans more than 10 times!

Secular scientists view this as a potential for where the Earths water came from.

However, Creation Scientists view this as evidence that what God said is true. The Earth was formed out of water, and the ground was once watered by water flowing out of the ground. Then, when the flood came,

Genesis 7:11 NIV

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.

Genesis 7:

What scientists are discovering are the springs of the great deep! Where once they theorized about meteorites, they now recognize ‘springs of the great deep’.

Secular scientists and Creation scientists view the same evidence. However, they are viewing them from different worldviews. Secular scientists will not have God’s Word be true. So they will come up with theories for how it could be apart from what God has said.

Creation Scientists say, God has created. Let’s look at creation and find out ‘what are the springs of the great deep!’

Creation scientists also believe when God separated the waters above from the waters below that the atmosphere was created. Oxygen, which would sustain life.

However, secular scientists cannot have oxygen in the early earth. They have oxygen being produced later by bacteria. Why?

Secular scientists need life to evolve from non-organic materials found in the cooling earth. How can you get organic materials from inorganic?All life is built from Amino-acids which are the basic building block. So, in the 1950s came the Miller-Urey experiment.

Oxygen is a poisonous gas that oxidizes organic and inorganic materials. So, to avoid this problem, they assume the earth had no oxygen. Rather, they used water, methane, ammonia and hydrogen mixture for the atmosphere. These compounds do not react. So they added electricity (to simulate lightning)

The experiment did produce amino acids.

By re-creating the early atmosphere (ammonia, water, hydrogen and methane) and passing an electric spark (lightning) through the mixture, Miller and Urey proved that organic matter such as amino acids could have formed spontaneously. - Kenneth Miller and Joseph Levine, Biology, 5th ed. (Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall, 2000).

However there are some problems that they do not tell you about in the textbooks...

Problems:

“There is no scientific proof that Earth ever had a non-oxygen atmosphere such as evolutionists require. Earth’s oldest rocks contain evidence of being formed in an oxygen atmosphere.” - H. Clemmey and N. Badham, “Oxygen in the Atmosphere: An Evaluation of the Geological Evidence,” Geology 10 (1982): 141.

If there is not oxygen, there is no ozone. Ultraviolet rays would destroy the biological molecules.

What we have is sort of a “Catch 22” situation. If we have oxygen we have no organic compounds, but if we don’t have oxygen we have none either. - M. Denton, Evolution: A Theory in Crisis(Bethesda, MD: Adler & Adler, 1985), p. 261.

So the theory is that life began in the oceans. However, water does not help...

Furthermore, water tends to break chains of amino acids apart. If any proteins had formed in the oceans 3.5 billion years ago, they would have quickly disintegrated. - R. Morris, The Big Questions (New York: Times Books/Henry Holt, 2002), p. 167.

Additionally, amino acids come in two forms, left handed and right handed. And, there are over 2,000 types of amino acids, of which only 20 are used in life, and they are all left-handed. Right-handed amino acids are never found in proteins.

And, left and right handed amino acids bond together!!

Experiments all produce equal amounts of left and right handed amino acids! This is detrimental to life.

So we remain profoundly ignorant of how life originated. Yet the Miller-Urey experiment continues to be used as an icon of evolution, because nothing better has turned up. Instead of being told the truth, we are given the misleading impression that scientists have empirically demonstrated the first step in the origin of life. - J. The Earth was formed out of water and by water. The deep springs attest to the truth of God’s Word.

Can life spontaneously evolve in water? Well, no, so the experiment was for on land, in an atmosphere without oxygen, but with water vapor.

However, that would not work, so we go back into the water. But water would destroy the new building blocks necessary for life.

Is there a better theory? Yes. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And through him all things that exist were made.

Rather than denying that the Earth was from out of and by water, let’s believe God.

Now, let’s see the next part Peter says will be denied.

Geology today is well explained by the Great Flood. However, secular geologists do not believe what God has written, and cannot have it be true. So, they come up with theories about what we find geologically.

We find layers in the Earth. Secular geologists claim these layers were laid down slowly, over millions of years.

We find layers in ice. Secular scientists say these ice rings are years.

We find fossils in the layers. Secular scientists know fossilization can happen rapidly, but I have read many sights where the fossils are said to be slowly buried and fossilized. Are fossils formed slowly?

When you look at the layers, there are problems for the secular geologist and scientist.

Does radiometric dating work?

Are the layers really millions of years?

Mt. Etna – erupted 2100 years ago, but rocks were dated 25 million years ago.

Sunset Crater, Northern Arizona – erupted in 1065 AD, but rocks were dated 200,000 years old.

Lava flows at Mt. Ngaurhoe, New Zealand – erupted in 1949, 1954, but rocks dated 275,000 yrs old.

Hualalai basalt, Hawaii erupted 200 years ago, but rocks were dated 1.4 to 22 million yrs old.

Mt. Etna basalt, Sicily, erupted in 1971, but rocks were dated 140,000 to 350,000 yrs old.

Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, but rocks were dated up to 2.8 million years old.

Where is the erosion?

The different layers appear to lay one on top of the other, as flat surfaces. If there were millions of years between, where is the erosion?

What about polystrate fossils?

There are fossils of trees found around the world that go through several layers. Are the trees fossilized over millions of years? Some secular scientists now say these polystrates are from rapid burial from a catastrophe. However, they still cannot explain the ones that go through layers that are said to be millions of years.

Are the ice layers years?

In 1945 a squadron of bombers and escorts crash landed in Greenland. The crews were rescued and the planes abandoned. When they went back to find the planes in the 1980s, the planes were found under 250 feet of ice. Not all of the rings could have been years since it was only about 40 years since the planes were on the surface.

Does slow sedimentation explain geologic formations?

Geologic formations, or layers cover continents! While sedimentation can explain river deltas, continental formations are something else! How big was it to make continent size deposits? How about a worldwide flood?

What about misplaced fossils?

There are also fossils that confound secular scientists because they are in the wrong layers.

Plants were not to evolve until 100 million years after Cambrian trilobites. However many plant fossils have been recovered from Cambrian rock all over the world.

“Despite tempting fragments of evidence, such as cutinized [waxy] spores and bits of xylem [wood] dating back to the Cambrian period . . .” most evolutionists still believe that land plants did not evolve until much later. - T.E. Weier, C.R Stocking, and M.G. Barbour, Botany, 5th edition (New York: John Wiley and Sons, 1974).

These fossils that occur too low occur often enough to have a name: Stratigraphic leak. Those that are too high: “re-worked specimen”

What about soft-tissues and DNA in fossils?

Remember Sue? A T-rex studied by the National Science Foundation which studied its blood cells and timed the announcement with Jurassic Park film.

More recently, Dr. Mary Schweitzer found soft tissue inside T-rex femur.

What is the problem? Soft tissue and DNA cannot last more than a few thousand years. This has not convinced many secular scientists.

In an article “Schweitzer’s Dangerous Discovery,”

One reviewer told Schweitzer he didn’t care what the data said, he knew (by his faith in millions of years of struggle and death?) that what she was finding wasn’t possible. When Schweitzer wrote back and said, “Well, what data would convince you?” the reviewer said, “None.”

Schweitzer and her team have continued the research, and written more articles of more discoveries, including platypus soft-tissue, and independent lab verifications.

What about living fossils?

Or, fossils that were found to be so old, with not others found in more recent layers and thus said to be extinct… until they have been found alive still today, like the colecanth.

What about C-14?

C-14 decays so that after about 80,000 years, there will be no C-14 left. Yet, C-14 is found in every sample of coal tested. Coal is said to be millions of years old. C-14 is found in dinosaur bones. Which are supposed to be millions of years old. C-14 is found in diamonds from seven different deep-earth mines in South Aftrica, which are supposed to be millions of years old.

Is there a better explanation?

Is there a better explanation for the layers than millions of years? Is there a theory that would explain how there is no erosion between the layers? Is there a theory that would explain how the polystrate fossils go through layers that are said to be millions of years? Is there a better theory that actually explains what is observed?

Billions of years is the foundational premise for those who do not want to believe in God. Then, based upon that premise they produce theories to hopefully show how their foundational premise is true.
