“Hallowed Be Thy Name”

Matthew 16:9 NKJV “Hallowed be Thy Name”

I.              “Our Father” is also our God

A.               Psalm 89:26 NKJV “He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’”

II.           “Our Father” is to be hallowed

A.               “Hallow” means “to set apart”

B.                We are to see our Father God as different from all other earthly fathers

1.          Malachi 1:6 NKJV “A son honors his father, and a servant His master. If then I am the Father, Where is my respect? And if I am a Master, Where is my Reverence? Says the Lord of hosts?”

C.               The quality of our prayer life is directly related to how we view God

III.        No. 1:  We hallow the Father by esteeming His Name

A.               Exodus 20:7 (NKJV) “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

B.                Leviticus 24:15-16 (NKJV) “Then you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin. 16 And whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall certainly stone him, the stranger as well as him who is born in the land. When he blasphemes the name of the Lord, he shall be put to death.”

IV.       No. 2:  We hallow the Father by acknowledging Him as God

A.               God is not like us, other people, or like other gods

B.                God is Omnipresent: He is everywhere

C.               God is Omniscient: He knows everything

D.               God is Omnipotent: He is all powerful

E.                God is Sovereign: He is over all

V.          No. 3:  We hallow the Father by reverencing Him

A.               Showing honoring

B.                Showing respect

C.               Showing awe

D.               Showing gratitude

VI.       No. 4:  We hallow the Father by fearing Him

A.               1 Peter 1:17 NKJV “And if you call upon the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear.”

B.                Acts 5:1-11 Ananias and Sapphira, “So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.” (v. 11)

VII.    No. 5:  We hallow the Father by being obedient children

A.               1 Peter 1:13-16 NKJV “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”

 

VIII. No. 6:  We hallow the Father by being like Him

A.               1 Peter 1:15-16 NKJV “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”

IX.       No. 7:  We hallow the Father by worshiping Him as holy

A.               Isaiah 6:1-3 NKJV In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’”

B.                Revelation 4:8 (NKJV) The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!’”

X.          No 8:  We hallow the Father by giving Him our best

A.               Malachi 1:6-7 NKJV “Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’ You offer defiled food on My altar. But you say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’ By saying, ‘The table of the Lord is contemptible.’”

B.                We must not look at God’s offering as unworthy of our best

C.               We must esteem what we do for the Lord and do it with excellence

XI.       Response to the Word

A.               Do you regard the Name of the Lord as holy?

B.                Do you blaspheme the Name of the Lord?

C.               Do you live holy as He is holy?
