“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”
Matthew 6:9-13
I. Why does Jesus include our needs in prayer?
A. Worry will hinder us from trusting God
B. Seeking things will keep us from seeking God
C. God is interested in our daily needs
II. God is our Source
A. He is Jehovah-Jireh, The Lord who Provides
B. Psalm 24:1 (NKJV) “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness.”
C. 2 Corinthians 9:8-10 (NKJV) “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written, ‘He has disbursed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.’ Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness.”
D. God taught Israel this lesson with the manna in the wilderness
E. Daily Bread
1. The bread of provision
a Matthew 6:11 (NKJV) “Give us this day our daily bread”
2. The bread of healing and deliverance
a Matthew 15:26 (NKJV) “But He answered and said, ‘It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.’”
3. The bread of life
a John 6:35 (NKJV) “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
III. God cares about us
A. Mark 4:38 (NKJV) “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
B. 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NKJV) “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
IV. God knows our needs
A. Matthew 6:8 (NKJV) “…For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”
B. Matthew 6:32 (NKJV) “For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”
V. God wants to provide
A. Psalm 23 The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want…
B. Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
VI. God wants us to ask
A. James 4:2 (NKJV) “You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.”
B. Matthew 7:7-8 (NKJV) “Ask, and it will be give to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
C. Asking reminds us that God is our Source
VII. God wants us to seek Him first
A. Matthew 4:4 (NKJV) “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”’”
B. Matthew 6:24 (NKJV) “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
C. John 6:27 (NKJV) “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
D. Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
E. Seeking God’s kingdom first causes our lives to line up with His provision
VIII. God wants us to trust Him
A. Matthew 6:25-34 (NKJV)
B. Luke 12:32-34 (NKJV) “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give alms; provide for yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches or moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
C. God wants us to trust that as we follow Him, He will take care of our needs
IX. Response to the Word
A. Make God your Source
B. Stop worrying about tomorrow
C. Ask God to supply needs
D. Trust God each day
E. Seek God and not things
