Psalm 91

Foundation Scripture:   Psalm 91

 

1.       Four Names of God mentioned in verses 1-2

          a.       The Most High (Elyon):  Highest in elevation, Supreme

b.       Almighty (El Shaddai):  The Almighty, the Burly One, The Impregnable One

c.       The Lord (Yahweh):  "I AM THAT I AM" or The Self-Existent One

d.       My God (Elohim):  "The Sublime God"

2.       He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High

a.       To "dwell" (H3247, yaw-shab) means to sit down and by implication means, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marry

b.       “Secret”:  "Secret" (H5643, say-ther) means a hiding place by virtue of a cover

              1)       Matthew 6:5-6 The Secret Place of Private Prayer        

                   2)       Psalm 27:4-5 The Secret Place of His Tabernacle

3.       Blessings of dwelling in the SECRET PLACE

a.       GOD’S PRESENCE:  “Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

1)       Psalm 17:8  "Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings."

b.       CONFIDENCE IN GOD:  “I will say of the Lord, HE IS my refuge and my fortress, MY GOD, IN HIM I will trust.”

          1)       Faith vs. fear

2)       2 Timothy 1:7  “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

c.       DELIVERANCE:  “Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.”

          1)       “Fowler” is one who traps birds

          2)       “Snare” is a trap or entanglement

                   a)       Luke 21:34-36

          3)       “Perilous pestilence”:  “quick falling plague”

d.       PROTECTION:  “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge.”

1)       Winged Cherubim of the Tabernacle

                   2)       Wings speak of comfort (Matthew 23:37)

                   3)       Wings speak of favor and security

a.       Psalm 17:8  "Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the  shadow of Your wings."

b.       Psalm 31:20  "You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues."

e.       ESTABLISHED IN TRUTH:  “His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”

          1)       Shield (used in hand to hand combat)

2)       Buckler (Large shield that protects the entire body during heavy enemy onslaught)

f.       FREEDOM FROM FEAR“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.”

                   1)       The terror by night:  (REST)

                   2)       The arrow that flies by day (WORK)

3)       The pestilence that walks in darkness (REST)

                   4)       The destruction that lays waste at noonday (WORK)

g.       PRESEVATION IN TROUBLE:  “A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked.”

h.       PRESERVATION AGAINST EVIL:  “No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.”

i.        ANGELIC PROTECTION:  “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”

j.        POWER OVER THE ENEMY“You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample under foot.”

1)       Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give you the authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

k.       DOMINION OVER ENEMIES:  “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I shall deliver him; I will set him on high because He has known My name.”

l.        ANSWER TO PRAYER IN TIME OF TROUBLE:  “He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.”

m.      LONG LIFE AND SALVATION:  ‘With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.”
