Recounting to the Next Generation

Pastor E. Keith Hassell

Psalm 78:5-8 (NKJV) For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; 6 That the generation to come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children, 7 that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments; 8 And may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set its heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.”

Genesis 18:19 (NKJV) For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

1.     We must recount His words to the next generation (What the Lord has said)

a.      Deuteronomy 4:9-10 (NKJV) “Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, 10 especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’”

b.     Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NKJV) “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

c.     Isaiah 38:19 (NKJV) The living, the living man, he shall praise You, as I do this day; the father shall make known Your truth to the children.”

2.     We must recount His deeds to the next generation (What the Lord has done)

a.      Exodus 12:24-27 (NKJV) And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever. 25 It will come to pass when you come to the land which the Lord will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service. 26 And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ 27 that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ So the people bowed their heads and worshiped.”

3.     We must recount His attributes to the next generation (What the Lord is like)

a.      Deuteronomy 6:5 (NKJV) “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!”

b.     Psalm 22:30-31 (NKJV) A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, 31 they will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, that He has done this.”

a.      Psalm 71:18 (NKJV) Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come.”

b.     Psalm 78:3-4 (NKJV) Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.”

c.     Psalm 145:4 (NKJV)“One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.”
