Salt and Light

Foundation Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16
I. You are the salt of the earth
A. Salt was a precious commodity in trade. People were often paid in salt. (Idiom: “He is not worth his salt.”)
B. Salt is a flavor enhancer
C. Salt is a preservative
D. Leviticus 2:13 “And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.”
E. Salt that has lost its savor is good for nothing except to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men (no one would allow it to be thrown onto his property. It was cast onto the street for walking and keeping grass from growing.)
II. You are the light of the world
A. Light dispels the darkness
B. Light reveals what is hidden (John 3:
C. Light awakens the sleeper
D. Light defines darkness
E. Light is necessary for sight (Blind by virtue of pitch darkness)
F. Light represents the life of God (John 1:4 “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”)
G. Light represents our witness before men (Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”)
H. We set are to set the light on a lampstand so that all it give light to all who are in the house.
I. Lamps are put in dark places
J. Paul was called to be a light to the Gentiles (Acts 14:47)
K. Ephesians 5:8-14 Walk in the Light
III. We are called to be salt and light
A. We must be salty (it is time to get out of the box)
B. We must allow our light to shine before men (it is time to be willing to be set in the dark places of this world)
