Idol of Self

Self, I bow before you and make you first place in my life.  I commit myself to serve you all of the days of my life.  I will seek to do your will and yours alone.  I make you my first thought and priority.  I will ensure that you always have your way, get what you want, and do what you want to do.  I will make you the focus of all of my thoughts and will defend your rights at all costs. I will use whatever means possible to accomplish your will---manipulation, intimidation, and domination.  I will spend my life seeking to exalt your name, make you look good, and give you everything you want.  In making you first place in my life, I sacrifice to you my marriage, my children, my church, my job, my friends, my soul, and the will of God.  I will declare daily by my actions, “Self, you are god!”

Idol of Money & Possessions

I bow my life before the god of money and possessions.  I acknowledge you as my source of provision, peace, and fulfillment.  You are my fortress and defense from all trouble. “In you will I trust.” I give to you the focus of my life---my time, energy, creativity, and attention.   I will spend my life seeking you.  The cry of my heart will always be, “More of you!”  You are all I need.  I acknowledge that you can fix any problem and meet any challenge.  You are the measure of true success.  I will gladly give you my life.  I give to you my soul.  I offer up my eternity for the sake of what you can give.  I will glory in your presence and make those who love you my truest companions.  I will walk in the fellowship of your followers.  I will eat, drink, and be merry in your presence.  For you are the source of the good life.

The Idol of Job & Career

I bow before you, the god of job and career. For it is you who gives me true purpose and significance in life.  Without you I could do nothing or have nothing.  You have made me what I am and have given me a reason to get up each morning.  You are my source of security and self-worth. How could I live without you?  Therefore I will give you my future, my time, focus, and energy.  I will do what you ask of me even at the expense of my own life, my wife, children, or service unto Jesus.  I will seek first your kingdom.  I will seek your glory and approval above all others.  I will meet all of your demands and willingly compromise my convictions to do your will.  I will give myself to the mission of winning customers and gaining contracts.  I will fear you lest you cast me away into unemployment and poverty.  I will not hold back from you my days of worship or service unto God.  For you are almighty, all powerful, all sufficient. Rule and reign over my life.  This I gladly do for you have promised me great reward---a paycheck, potential promotion, insurance, and a retirement pension.  Great is my employer!

Idol of Worldly Music

I bow before you, O god of worldly music.  For you have filled my life with song.  Your lyrics have filled my mind and from my heart I embrace your message.  I give to you my soul.  For you have the power to stir my soul and fill my mind with song.  Fashion and form me into your image.  Make me one with all of the world.  I will esteem highly those who sing your songs and count them also worthy of my worship.  I count them as my prophets and teachers who will lead me into the way of worldliness.  I esteem them as my heroes and role-models in life.  I will honor them with my earnings through posters, T-shirts, cd purchases, and concert tickets.  I will defy those who defy you.  I will be your messenger also, O god of music.  I will fill my car, my home, and my office with you so that others can also know you as I do.  May the atmosphere of my life be conducive unto your purpose in this age and bring many souls under your control.

Idol of Whoredom & Lust

O god of whoredom, I bow before you, the source of true physical pleasure.  .  I commit myself under your control.  Do with me as you will.  I give to you my eyes, my mind, my soul, and my body as instruments in your work.  I willing allow your cravings to rule in my life.  I worship the male and female anatomy.  I abandon all sense of responsibility as I yield myself under the power and passion of lust.  Possess me completely with each passing pleasure.  I give you my eyes to feast on naked and exposed flesh, pornography, x-rated videos, and computer porn.  Fill my mind with your fantasies.  May my thoughts be consumed with perversions.  I yield the members of my body under your control through masturbation, fornication, adultery, and homosexuality.  I commit to seek out those who have also given themselves to you.  I will seek to allure and influence the innocent for your glory.  May my life burn with passion for you!

Idol of Family and Friends

I bow to the god of family and friends.  I come to reaffirm my commitment unto you.  For I value your approval above the will of God.  Your opinions and feelings mean more to me than anything else.  You are the source of my happiness and security, and I will never compromise my allegiance to you.  I will never allow you to feel that you might be second unto anyone else, including God.  You are always first place in my life.  I commit to you that I will never allow anyone else---including God, to separate me from you.  I will not allow His call upon my life to compromise our relationship.  I will not allow His work to come before you.  I will not allow His word to separate me from the activities we have come to know and love together.  I will not share with you my faith so that I may gain your approval.  I reject all of these things so that we may be together forever---wherever that may be. 

Idol of Substance Abuse

I bow before you, the god of addiction.  Through your assortment of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, prescription medications, and drugs, I have found escape from reality.  I give to you my future.  I give to you my money, my family, my job, and my success in life.  I give to you my body.  Take it, destroy it, and numb it until it can feel no more.  For when I am with you, I feel free.  Reality is too painful.  But when I am in your presence I am content.  Fill my lungs and my veins with your overwhelming influence.  How can I face another day without you?  I live for these moments with you.  My cry for you is always, “Just one more time!”  Finally, I give to you my soul.  You have taken me and made me what I never dreamed I would be.  I owe what I have become to you.

Idol of Sports & Entertainment

I bow before you, O my god of sports and entertainment.  Thank you for bringing such joy and excitement to my life.  No matter which sport or hobby you have attracted my worship, you have gained my loyalty.  Through the joy and pleasure you give, you have won my heart.  I give to you my unwavering commitment during entire seasons of my year. Truly, my wife, children, and church family have witnessed that you are my god.  I have gladly given to you my Sundays in my pursuit of the “goal” you have laid before me---whether that be the big buck, the big bass, the World Series or the Super Bowl.  I give to you my focus, energy, money, and time as an offering that none other, not even Jesus is not worthy of.  I am a follower, a fan---yes, a fanatic. Therefore I will seek to influence others to worship you also, for you are worthy of our compromise.

Idol of Pride

I bow my knee to Lucifer, the one who exalts himself above all that is called God. For you have made me in your image.  I too have been exalted and I worship who I have become.  There is no one like me.  My beauty, intelligence, influence, and wisdom are like no other.  Others have excelled, but I have excelled above them all.  The mirror is my witness---for who can compare with me?  Often I stop to gaze into the mirror to admire my own beauty and stature.  I have no flaw or weakness.  Those that may appear to be are outnumbered by those of my adversaries.  I am becoming the image of perfection.  My knowledge is boundless.  My understanding is incomprehensible.  Who would dare defy me?  Who would dare to rise above me?  Who would dare to challenge me?  Because there is no other like me, I need not bow to anyone.  I will exalt my image in the presence of all.  I am like God.  I willingly receive all worship and praise.  For I am worthy.

Idol of Rebellion

I bow to the idol of rebellion and its father, Lucifer.  For I worship power and control.  I worship personal power and authority.  I recognize no other authority as legitimate in my life.  All other sources of authority must be conquered for they undermine my control.  Power is my source of authority and I will only be contained by power. I will use my power to resist all who claim authority over my life and others.  I skillfully use the tactics of intimidation, manipulation, and domination to exert pressure and control over others.  I do not respect or honor those who claim authority and I seek to undermine those who claim such authority.  Through the influence of my own rebellion I will gather others of like spirit around me so that my power and influence over others may increase.  Rebellion has become my life, my strength, and my god.  I willing yield my soul to its control to the demise of all other authority.

Idol of Stubbornness

 I bow my knee in worship to the idol of stubbornness.  For I worship my own self-willed opinions and endeavors.  I refuse to allow any other opinion to sway me.  I may listen, but I am under no obligation to change.  Not even God can change me.  I will not bow.  I will not change.  I will not yield.  I will not conform.  I will not back off. I will not budge.  I will not give in.  I will not submit.  I will not yield to the opinions of others.  I will not be committed.  I will not be faithful.  I will not serve.  I will not reconsider.  When I get ready, I will. But until then you can count me out.  If I decide to do something, I cannot be stopped or adjusted.  You can appeal, but know that I will prevail over you by the power of my will.  While others conform, I intend to reinforce my opinion so that I cannot be moved.  I love my opinion and am not interested in the facts. I demand all to worship my opinions and endeavors.  For they are unchangeable.

The Lordship of Christ

Lord Jesus, I bow my knee unto You.  You alone are worthy of my worship and praise.  For You have saved me, a sinner, from the power of my sin.  I am nothing without you.  I cannot repay You for what You have done for me.  I am so unworthy of Your forgiveness and love.  I willingly submit myself under Your lordship.  I release all of my rights and the ownership of my life into Your hands.  I give to you my life---my time, energy, money, family, career, mind, will, desires, music, hobbies, and entertainments.  Take it all.  It belongs to you.  Make of me what you will.  I put you first place in all of my relationships at home, at church, and at work.  Whatever You tell me to do, Lord, I will do.  Whatever Your word commands, I will obey.  Wherever You tell me to go, I will go.  Nothing belongs to me, for it now belongs to You.  My life is not my own.  I live only to serve and please You, my Lord.  Thank You for my salvation and the privilege of knowing You.  I count it a pleasure and a privilege to serve you My King!  Hallelujah!
