Foundation Scripture: Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:4-8; 2:1-4, 37-39
I. Why preach on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?
A. John the Baptist foretold it to be a sign of the age of Messiah
B. Jesus talked about it and told us to receive it
C. It empowers the believer for ministry
D. It is a gift that is available to all
E. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God
II. What the Baptism with the Holy Spirit is NOT
A. It is not salvation
B. It is not the indwelling of the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9)
C. It is not the gifts of the Spirit, including tongues. These are the manifestations of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.
III. A look at four New Testament baptisms (Hebrews 6:1-2)
A. The Baptism in Water (Matthew 3:11)
1. The believer is the baptizer
2. Water is the baptismal element
3. The purpose is repentance of sin and identification with Christ
4. The evidence of water baptism is a life committed to Jesus Christ
B. The Baptism into the Body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-31)
1. The Holy Spirit is the Baptizer
2. The Body of Christ is the baptismal element
3. The purpose is to fit each member into the church, the body of Christ
4. The evidence of this baptism are saints who actively function in their specific calling and grace
C. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit
1. Jesus is the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit
2. The Holy Spirit is the baptismal element
3. The purpose is to empower the believer for the work of the ministry
4. The evidence of this Baptism is supernatural demonstrations of the Holy Spirit and power
D. The Baptism with fire
1. Jesus is the Baptizer with fire
2. Fire is the baptismal element
3. The purpose is to refine the motives, character, and works of the believer
4. The evidence of this baptism is a purified and holy life
IV. Jesus and the Believer
A. Born of the Spirit
1. Jesus (Luke 1:35 Conceived of the Holy Spirit)
2. Believer (John 3:5 Born of the Holy Spirit)
B. Filled with the Spirit
1. Jesus (John 3:34 He has the Spirit without measure)
2. Believer (Ephesians 3:19 Filled with all the fullness of God)
C. Baptized with the Holy Spirit
1. Jesus (Matthew 3:16-17)
2. Believer (Acts 1:3)
D. Led of the Holy Spirit
1. Jesus (Matthew 4:1)
2. Believer (Romans 8:14)
E. Sealed by the Spirit
1. Jesus (John 6:27 God the Father has set His seal on Him)
2. Believer (Ephesians 1:13 you were sealed with the H.S. of promise)
F. Empowered by the Holy Spirit
1. Jesus ( Luke 4:14 Jesus returned in the power of the Holy Spirit)
2. Believer (Acts 1:8 You shall receive power)
G. Anointed by the Spirit
1. Jesus (Acts 10:38 Whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit)
2. Believer (I John 2:27 That anointing dwells in you)
V. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is the mantle of Jesus for ministry
A. Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind and his mantle came down to Elisha. Elisha walked with the same anointing as Elijah because he received his mantle to finish his work.
B. Jesus was taken up in a cloud and His mantle of the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost and is available for every believer.
VI. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts
A. Acts 2:1-4 The Day of Pentecost
B. Acts 8:4-25 The Samaritans receive the Spirit
C. Acts 9:17-19 Paul receives the Spirit
D. Acts 10:44-48 The Gentiles receive the Spirit
E. Acts 19:1-7 Disciples of John receive the Spirit
VII. How to receive
A. Repent of your sins and receive Christ as Savior (Acts 2:38)
B. Receive Christ as your personal Baptizer with the Holy Spirit
C. Receive the Spirit with the hearing of faith (Galatians 3:2)
D. Believe that the Father will give you exactly what you ask (Luke 11:9-13)
