My obedience Got me in it will get me out

Acts 5:22–42 NKJV

But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. So one came and told them, saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!” But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them. Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.” And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Imprisoned Apostles Freed

the High priest rose up filled with indignation. they rose up because they were teaching the resurrection despite being clear of their intent should they continue to teach in Jesus.

because you have come to faith in christ. its real easy to be backup for the disciples in your head.

think about the biblical truths that you hold too today that before salvation didn't make sense and seemed archaic to you?

for for many people who came to jesus in single diggets of their lives and started serving the Lord in their late teens and early 20’s; then found themselves in a place of leadership

they put them into public prison to humiliate them.

turn these things over to God. allow Him to touch you.

the Lord wastes nothing! they put them into prison to discredit them.

20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”

God delivered them to accredit them.

the disciples where obedient.

we need to step out of the my four and no more, mentality.

Apostles on Trial Again

22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!”

here is that moment when the Lord accredits the Apostles in their witness to the enemies of Christ.

its important to understand that these are enemies of Christ and not of the Apostles.

24 Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be.

this verse just gives us a clue that they are as freaked out as you and i would be if we had been there.

(verses 26-28) (NKJV) 26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!”

their concern now that they be held accountable for what they did. ( Judgement for you Mercy for me).

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 31 Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

(VERSE 29) he tells them again that we should obey God rather than man.

then he again summarizes the previous sermons:

God raised Jesus/ you murdered him. (verse 30)

Jesus is at the right hand of the father as the savior, to give repentance to Isreal, that would include them. Jesus is poised to forgive. (verse 31).

we are His witnesses to those things, this growth you see among the people, comes from those who are coming into obedience (Verse 32).

Gamaliel’s Advice

Gamaliel-has personal integrity and is respected by the people.

he reminds them of another teacher who perished named Judas (not the same Judas that betrayed Jesus)

(verses 38-39) stop setting these men up to be promoted. if its not of God it will fail, but if it is of God. your fighting God.

so they beat them to remind them who was in charge. (verse 40)

(verse 41) they departed rejoicing that they where counted worthy. to be honest i don't think I've ever had this reaction.

(verse 42) they stayed focused on their ministry.
