INTRODUCTION:

The past two weeks, we have talked about misconceptions.
A. In the first lesson, we learned about misconceptions about biblical authority.

We learned that these misconceptions must not be relied upon as our authority when answering biblical questions.
A. These misconceptions are:
1.
My personal likes, dislikes, opinions, or what pleases me.
2. What is popular.
3. My inability to “see any harm in it”.
4. Long-standing practice.
5. My feelings.
6. Silence of the Scriptures.
B. In the second lesson, we learned that misconceptions lead to division.
1.
When these misconceptions are relied upon for biblical authority, they divide the church.
1 Cor.
1.10-
A. Anytime a misconception is believed over the truth, it is harmful for the church.
B. Any time a misconception divides the church, it is sinful, because Christ’s plea for unity and oneness through His Word is ignored.
Jn 17.20-
C. In the third lesson, we are going to learn that the church is to be constructed on the basis of biblical authority.

In this lesson, we are going to answer three questions.
A. Who is to build the church?
B. What is the church to be built upon?
C. How is the church to be built?
D. How is the Church to be built?
BODY:
1. WHO IS TO BUILD THE CHURCH?
A. The “I will build My church” answers this question.
1.
The words “I” and “My” say two things.
A. One, Jesus, by using the word “I”, said that He personally would build the church.
B. Two, Jesus, by using the word “My”, claimed ownership to the church.
B. This is the first question that must be answered when discussing biblical authority.
1. Often times, I think we get the answer confused as to who has the right to build the church.
A. This is shown by all the different names on the buildings which claim to be His church.
1. Christ is the only One who deserves any credit for the building of the church.
2. His name and His name alone should be the only name on the church, for He owns it and He built it.
Eph 1.14
2. WHAT IS THE CHURCH TO BE BUILT UPON?
A. Some believe that the “rock” in this verse referred to Peter.

This is where the doctrine that Peter was the first pope comes from.
2. If you look at the context and original language, however, this doctrine is refuted.
Matt 16.
A. Jesus asked the disciples a question: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
B. They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
C. Jesus would ask the question again, desiring this time to know who they thought He was: “But who do you say that I am?”
D. Peter would answer, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
E. Jesus would answer Peter, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”
F. Jesus would answer the same question back to Peter in verse 18a, “And I also say to you that you are Peter.”

Why would Jesus answer this question back to Peter?
A. Peter was impulsive and sometimes got a big head, it seems; sometimes, he thought he always had the answer.
Remember when Jesus told Peter, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”?
A. Peters response to that was, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” ()
2. Remember when Peter cut off the ear of Malchus and Jesus reattached it?

B. Jesus, knowing this, told Peter he was a small rock, for his name in Greek is Petros, which means ‘small rock’.
G. Jesus, in verse 18b, would make contrast from the small rock, Peter “petros” to the large rock, “petra” on which the church would be built.

B. The church is to be built upon Jesus.

If anyone lays any other foundation, they build upon the sand.
A. If the house is built upon the sand, it falls apart.

3. HOW IS THE CHURCH TO BE BUILT?
A. The Church is built on the authority of Christ’s Word.
1. Notice, “whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them” builds on the foundation.
A. explains when we do the sayings of the Lord, we are building the church in the name of the Lord.
2. Jesus is building the church, and he does this by His Word.

A. In He instructs His disciples to “Go” and lay the foundation for the church.
B. Then in He tells the disciples that ‘whoever hears My words and does them will be added to this foundation,’ so Jesus can build the church from the saved.
C. We continue to maintain the church that Jesus built and allow Jesus to add more bricks by allowing biblical authority to be the basis for the continued construction of the church.
Eph 2.
D. The apostles and the inspired writers of the New Testament laid the foundation for the church, so the church can be constructed on the basis of biblical authority and nothing else.
CONCLUSION:
1.
Will you put away misconceptions that lead to division?
2. Will you allow Christ to be the foundation for the church?
3. Will you allow Christ to build His church?
A. By allowing biblical authority to be the basis for its construction?
1.
If you will allow this to happen, Christ will unite His people and build His church.
