Session 2: Demons
If we deny the existence of demons, we are denying the truth of God’s Word
Background of our Study Verses
Jesus was returning with Peter, James, and John after His transfiguration and was confronted by a father trying to have his son exorcised from the demon that had been possessing him for some time.
The remaining nine disciples were unable to cast out the demon.
Someone read and someone else pick up
Examples of other encounters between Jesus and demons:
1. Demon in the Synagogue:
2. The possessed swine:
3. Driving out demons by the power of demons?
4. Approached by demons:
5. Greek woman’s daughter: ;
6. Mary Magdalene:
Our study is about demons today, but it actually centers around something bigger: lack of faith
Did they have the authority to do so?

Did they have the authority to do so?

Were they successful in the past?
Look at
Why do you think they failed this time?
Consider they have had precious successes and now felt the power was generated from within themselves,
What is your takeaway from ?
“Why could we not cast it out?”
Besides lacking understanding (, ; ), the disciples lack the ability to fully carry out their commission from Jesus ().
Their failure is an occasion for encouragement to more prayer (; ; ), implying that more time and effort in prayer (and therefore in closer fellowship with God) leads to growth in faith.
Having experienced success, the disciples felt the power to cast out demons was within them now instead of through God
Can we see ourselves in this?
WRITE ON BOARD: “STRENGTH THROUGH WEAKNESS”
(ESV)
What does God think of us when we rely on ourselves and our own wisdom?
Refer to ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
It’s pretty clear what the Lord thinks of those who puff themselves up.
It is our own intellect that often gets in the way of faith.
We seek to understand first before believing, when it should be the opposite.
We want to remain strong in and of our own self, yet this is the very thing that hinders our relationship with God.
Indeed, God calls on us to be strong—but not in ourselves, but in Him and His Word (; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ).
How do these verses relate to our study today and the nine disciples?
However, We still must allow Him to use us, to change us, and to refine us.
This requires an active faith, not just letting go and waiting for God to solve every problem that we encounter.
If we do not allow God to help deliver us, we will try to suppress the sin in our life by our own attempts to overcome it.
However, the truth of the matter is that we are in this predicament because of a failure, not of power, but in leading a life in holiness.
This is not the design of the Christian faith.
What Strength through Weakness Means
only when we are at our weakest, only when we can truly surrender ourselves to Him, can we find our true strength.
this does not mean to just “Let Go and Let God”
We wrongfully beg to God to make us stronger so we can prevail of our own merits, thus making the ability to conquer sin within our own power.
We seek deliverance through our own internal strength rather than reliance on Him.
God wants us to come to Him in our state of brokenness and contrition (read the 51st Psalm as a perfect example from an adulterous and murdering David).
