Matthew 26:1-5
Matthew 26:1–5 ESV
1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
A Harmony of the Gospels § 140. Jesus Predicts His Crucifixion Two Days Hence (Jewish Friday)

Probably at Bethany on Tuesday evening (beginning of Jewish Wednesday). The Rulers in Jerusalem plot His death

I. An extraordinary savior (1-5)

a. God saves his people through the sacrifice of a lamb.

Matthew 26:1–2 ESV
1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

b. Christ submits himself to the saving work of the cross.

Matthew 26:3–5 ESV
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
Matt 26
Caiaphas. High priest during the life and ministry of Jesus. As official head of the Jewish state Caiaphas presided over the council, or Sanhedrin, its highest court. Next to the Roman governor he was the most powerful man in Judea and was responsible to the Romans for the conduct of the nation.
John 10:18 ESV
18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

II. An extravagant sacrifice (6-13)

a. Making much of Jesus is costly.

Matthew 26:6–7 ESV
6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.
John 12:5 ESV
5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”
John
matt 26
In the house of Simon the Leper speaks of a man who has obviously been healed from Leprosy. Given the fact that a Leper would have been removed from the community as unclean.
The Woman is identified in as Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus.

PICTURE Of Alabaster Flask

Hosts of banquets customarily provided oil to anoint the heads of guests of notable social status. People often used expensive alabaster bottles, which were semitransparent and resembled marble, to store the most costly ointments. They would seal the ointment to prevent evaporation, requiring the long neck of the jar to be broken and the ointment to be expended at once.
Next Sunday following our evening activities we will meet in the fellowship hall @ 7:00 PM for RBC Team Time. What RBC Team Time does is allow us to organize ourselves for ministry in the upcoming church year. We want to make sure everyone understands how their committee/team is to function and what role they are to play. Remember the primary objective of each team/committee is ministry not meetings. So lets get ourselves ready to serve. If you have been enlisted by the Nominating Committee to serve on a committee/team for the 2017-2018 church year then please set aside this time and be present. I look forward to your service this year.

This ointment would have cost as much as three hundred denarii, a year’s wages for a day laborer.188 The purchase of such a gift represents an extraordinary sacrifice.
Mark 14:5 ESV
5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.
Don’t miss the extravagant price paid for her worship.
Charles Wesley -
When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride
Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

b. Making much of Jesus is controversial.

Matthew 26:8–9 ESV
8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.”
8-9
When you give to Jesus extravagantly - When your worship of Jesus Cost you something! - it will be misunderstood!
Jim and Elisabeth Elliot - Jim is speared to death by the Alqua indians - Eliziabeth goes to the indian who speared her hubsand.

c. Making much of Jesus is commendable.

Matthew 26:10–13 ESV
10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

No matter how much you give - no matter how much you sacrifice - not matter how extravagant - You will never wast anything on Jesus.

You will never wast anything on Jesus.

Only one life twill soon be past Only what’s done for Christ will last. CT Studd

III. An egregious sin (14-16)

Matthew 26:13–16 ESV
13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” 14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Matthew 26:14–16 ESV
14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
In the OT, this was the penalty paid by the owner of an ox that gored a slave to death (). Equivalent to about four months’ wages for a laborer (about $7,500 in modern terms), this meager sum suggests the low esteem in which Jesus was held by both Judas and the chief priests.

Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 1880.Sin tempts us to exchange heavens treasure for earthly trash.

Sin tempts us to exchange heavens treasure for earthly trash.

He never spent a dime!

Sin tempts us to love silver more than the savior.

Sin promises pleasure but delivers pain.

Is Jesus your treasure or his he your trash?

John 12:1–8 ESV
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
