Foundation Scripture: Luke 4:1-13; Matthew 26:36-41; 27:35-44
I. The first temptations of Christ in the wilderness: “If You are the Son of God”
A. Lust of the flesh (food)
B. Lust of the eyes (power)
C. Pride of life (Who I am)
II. The last temptation of Christ was to walk away from the cross: “If You are the Son of God deliver yourself”
III. Why did Jesus not walk away from the cross?
A. Devotion to the Father: He was submitted to His Father’s will
B. Love for us: He loved His own
C. Joy of the Harvest: For the joy set before Him
IV. Our temptations
A. Our first temptations as we come to Christ are to overcome the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life
B. Our last temptations are to walk away from laying down our life for others because it is too costly
V. What will keep us from walking away from our cross?
A. Devotion to the Father: Fulfilling His will to go
B. Love for others
1. 1 John 3:16 By this we know love in that He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren
C. Joy of the Harvest (Vision): Can we see what the Father is doing in His people?
