I am so glad you are here today.
My name is Steven and I am the lead pastor here at NCF.
If you are a visitor we would love to connect with you.
And the best way for us to do that is for you to fill out our connection card, which can be found in the pew back in front of you.
If you would fill that card out at some time during the service today and then at the end of service take it back to our connection table, we will hook you up with a really cool gift.
We are finishing up our series “This is us” by discussing “What we believe.”
We have gone over our:
Mission and Vision
Our 9 goals
Our values
And have heard 5 incredible Testimonies of God’s grace and power.
Like I said this week and next we will be finishing up the series by talking about:
What we believe.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The subtitle for today and next week’s message is “The Hill”.
(Show picture of marines holding up the flag.)
How many of you have seen this picture before?
It is a picture of Marines holding up the American flag at the top of a volcano on Iwo Jima, shortly after taking the hill.
Still under fire and with grenades being lawbed these brave men hoisted the flag in the air.
The marines had one strategic mission.
Get to the highest point and take it.
You see, the highest point on the Island was the most important point on the island.
Whoever controlled that highest point would control the island.
Many lives were lost, many brave men died as they climbed that volcanic cone, under sever fire.
Yet, each man knew this was a hill worth dying for.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I want to share with you our Hill.
The Hill in which we must be willing to die for.
Today I want to share with you our Hill.
The Hill in which we must be willing to die for.
Now there are many Doctrines Christians across the world do not see eye to eye on.
Some issues are as small as, should we use musical instruments or not.
Others are bigger such as, are we living in the Millennial Kingdom now, or is it yet to come?
And countless other disagreements.
But most of these issues are not worth dying for or killing one another over.
(though the church has unfortunately.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We may disagree over these issues and still recognize we are all on the same team.
Yet, there are clear Biblical doctrines the Historical Church has defended, climbed that mountain and refused to be moved.
It is these clear Biblical Doctrines that we must defend, hold tight to, and earnestly contend for.
.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doctrinal Statements are boring.
Let’s be honest for a moment.
Doctrinal statements are boring.
Let’s be even more honest.
Most people never read through a doctrinal statement fully.
What people normally do is they glance through it, once they see a couple key words, they toss it down and say “Looks good to me.”.
Why?
Because they are written as if they were contrived in some law office, using language most people will never use.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the Problem with that.
If your doctrinal statement bores you to sleep, how will you be able to defend it?
If your doctrinal statement reads like the KJV bible on ambient sleep medication how will you be able to defend it?
If your doctrinal statement is written on parchment in the language of Lawyers, how will you defend what you don’t even want to read?
No one is willing to die on a mountain that was created with an Oxford Dictionary and Robert’s Rules of Order.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With that in mind we have written our Doctrinal Statement in a Short and Long form.
I will be going over the Short form the next couple of weeks.
The point of the short form is to cause you to ask questions of the statement.
Sometimes you going to be like “Does it really say that?”
I have written it in a way that I hope and pray causes you to engage it, test it, and then defend it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, let’s get right into it!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What We Believe – prt 1
God is bigger, better and closer than we can imagine.
God is bigger – , ,
God is better than you can imagine – ,
God is closer than you can imagine.
– ,
Our God is bigger, better, and closer than we can imagine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 - We have made a mess of ourselves by trying to live our lives on our own.
God has given humanity two paths, the path of self-reliance leads to destruction, while the path of dependence on God leads to life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3- We are more sinful than we dare to know and more loved by God than we can ever imagine, at the same time.
We often think that God loves us because we are good.
But the truth is even in the deepest sickness of sin God loved you.
His rescue mission was based on love.
The truth is when we look deep into our own hearts, we can see this sickness we call sin.
Yet, we can also see the grace and love of God that is healing all our wounds, and sins.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 - Jesus is God showing himself to us.
Born of a virgin, God is with us.
–
Jesus lived a Sinless Life.
-
God looks just like Jesus.
Jesus is the expression of God’s mind and heart.
,
Who is God? what is God like?
Through Jesus, God fully expressed his character and nature.
Jesus is God showing himself to us.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5- Grace that came through the death of Jesus is the only way to have a relationship with God.
Jesus, saw himself as the only way to the Father.
–
Jesus lived a perfect life for us.
Jesus took on himself the penalty of sin so that we can have life.
Through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus we have been reconciled to God as our Father.
Jesus is the only way to reconciliation with God, because Jesus is God, giving himself to us and for us.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the Hill on which we must be willing to die.
These are the doctrines we must earnestly contend for.
As a covenant member, we are asking you to not only agree to these Doctrines but to be willing to contend for them in your life, and in the life of this church.
These are the Doctrines on which the Ancient Church passed to us through the Apostles, and then through the Church fathers in the form of the Apostles Creed.
