THE BIRTH OF A SON

GENESIS 18:1-15; 21:1, 2

INTRODUCTION:

Ellen Goodman wrote in an article for the “Hearld Leader” in Kentucky titled “Oldest Mom”.  And I quote:  “Arceli Keh wasn’t doing this for the Guinness Book of Records.  As the World’s Oldest Mom said after her identity was uncovered, ‘I wasn’t trying to make history.  I just wanted a baby.’  What we have here, Guinness notwithstanding, is a kind of do-it-yourself surrogate.  This wife went into a high-risk pregnancy--diabetes was one side effect--to carry the offspring of her husband’s sperm and another woman’s egg to fruition.”

The story is found in Genesis 18:1-15 and concludes in Genesis 21:1-2.   Let’s read from Genesis to find out about an even order woman who gave birth to a son.

Genesis 18:1--15;  21:1-2

I. Abraham meets some very important visitors-----(1--8)  Abraham invites the Lord and two others to a meal--Abraham

            A.  sitting at door to his tent

            B.  looks up to the distance horizon

            C.  sees three men walking towards him

            D. runs towards them

            E. the actions of Abraham towards the three stranger

II. (9-15) God reconfirms His promise of a son

            A. We may wonder why God repeats the promise again, so close to the time when He said

it previously. After all, it seems that God had been silent about the promise for more than

thirteen years, now He comes personally to repeat it twice in three months

            B. We need to hear God's promises over and over again; it is a way that God uses to

encourage and develop our faith: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by               the word of God (Romans 10:17)

            C.  Then, a profound statement by the Lord (as if God could do anything else but a                       profound statement)       “Is anything too hard for the Lord?

III.  Now, the scene changes to the pleading by Abraham for Sodom which I’m not going to cover now, but lets progress in time to a year later:  21:1-2

“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he

had promised.  Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the

very time God had promised him.”

A SON WAS BORN JUST AS GOD HAD PROMISED FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS

APPLICATIONS:

            1.  God is not limited by our limitations (understanding)

            2.  omnipotency of GOD (power of GOD)

            3.  God keeps His promises

            4.  Nothing is HID from GOD

            5.  Finally, the faith of Sarah broke through and she conceived and bore a son

and named him Isaac.  Heb. 11:11 “By faith Abraham, even though he was past                age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father, because

he considered him faithful who had made the promise.”
