WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?

There are over 1,000 published definitions of leadership

A few examples:

a. Leadership is following an example

b. Leadership is moving forward a set of beliefs

c. Leadership is motivating people to accomplish a purpose

d. Leadership is influence

“Anytime you use your influence to affect the thoughts and actions of others, you are engaging in leadership.” (Ken Blanchard)

6 TYPES OF LEADERS

1) Unpredictable Leaders

PROBLEM: Unpredictable leaders produce hesitant followers

Doesn’t follow through. Inconsistent. Easily persuaded by others. One extreme or another.
Friends that want to eat healthy or exercise...

EXAMPLE: David serving Saul

1 Samuel 16:21–23 ESV
And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.” And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.
1 Samuel 16:18–20 ESV
One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him.” Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul.
1 Samuel 18:10–11 ESV
The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.

SOLUTION: Be Consistent

Successful people do consistently what normal people do occasionally

2) Dominant Leaders

PROBLEM: Dominant leaders produce compliant followers

Fear and intimidation. Take all the credit. Accomplish short term results but people get tired of being bullied or taken advantage of.
Coach Gunn made me hate baseball...

EXAMPLE: Rehoboam (son of Solomon)

1 Kings 12:10–11 ESV
And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs. And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’ ”

SOLUTION: Ask More Questions

Great leaders earn followers who are committed, not compliant

3) Secretive Leaders

PROBLEM: Secretive leaders produce guarded followers

Lack of communication. Lack of trust. Lack of transparency.
Trying to keep everybody informed of our move to Ensenada....

EXAMPLE: The Judiazers

2 Corinthians 6:11–13 ESV
We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also.

SOLUTION: Communicate more often

The more people know, the more they will care

Great teams are not task-oriented, they are trust-oriented

4) Passive Leaders

PROBLEM: Passive leaders produce disengaged followers

Avoid conflict. Avoid controversy. Avoid confrontations. Avoid getting messy. Play it safe.
Some American churches are passive about racism...

EXAMPLE: The Apostle Peter

Matthew 26:
Matthew 26:69–70 ESV
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.”
Galatians 2:11–12 ESV
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.

SOLUTION: Do something

As a leader, doing something is always better than doing nothing

5) Healthy Leaders

SOLUTION: Healthy leaders produce faithful followers

a. Healthy leaders are predictable

b. Healthy leaders are collaborative

c. Healthy leaders are transparent

d. Healthy leaders are engaged

XAMPLE:

EXAMPLE:

EXAMPLE: King David

SOLUTION: Healthy leaders are predictable, collaborative, transparent, and engaged

EXAMPLE:
2 Samuel 23:15–17 ESV
And David said longingly, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it. He poured it out to the Lord and said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.

GOAL: Become a High Capacity Leader

Healthy organizations come from healthy people

Healthy leaders are not perfect, but they are productive

6) Empowering Leaders

SOLUTION: Empowering leaders produce other great leaders

Empowering leaders do everything a healthy leader does. In addition, they empower others

a. Empowering leaders give responsibilities away

b. Empowering leaders give authority away

c. Empowering leaders give freedom away

Emporing leaders do everything a healthy leader does. In addition, they empower others

Emporing leaders do everything a healthy leader does. In addition, they empower others

EXAMPLE: Jesus and His disciples

Acts 4:13 ESV
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:13

GOAL: Empower others

Empowering leaders don’t discover great leaders, they develop them

APPLICATION:

1. Lead yourself well

2. Lead others well

3. Lead leaders well

4. Lead teams well

Matthew 25:29 ESV
For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
