Intro: This topic was requested, but it is not unique or new.
God’s people have been seeking the answer for thousands of years.
There is no one simple answer, yet there are multiple and varied answers in scripture.
We will look at this question from a variety of perspectives both this morning and evening.
I) We are not alone
David frequently asks this question in Psalms – ; ; ; , – both concerning his own suffering and the prosperity of the wicked
Solomon took notice of this in Ecclesiastes –
Habakkuk was stunned when God told him about the coming invasion by the Chaldeans –
Peter asked this of Jesus – – because to this point they had seen little of the promise being fulfilled
If the only evidence of God and His justice is what we see now, then the skeptic will win the argument
II) Lesson of Job
One of the most challenging books – for the practical message about suffering – of any inspired writing
Why does God allow Job to undergo such tremendous suffering just to prove Satan wrong?
– ; – then his closest friends take turns falsely accusing him of an evil heart
Job and his friends are all trying to understand why this has happened, yet they cannot know what God knows – ;
So the first – and perhaps most important – answer to our question is that God alone knows the full reason –
III) Satan is powerful and dangerous
One of the lessons we learn from the story of Job is the origin of evil – 1:8-11 – he is the one who challenges our fear of God, and takes pleasure in bringing suffering to us
Satan is most dangerous when we neglect to seek God’s protection, when we feel secure in ourselves – ;
Difficult times have the advantage of reminding us of our need for God –
So a second answer is that the devil is the cause of our suffering, but God uses that to remind us that we constantly need to remain in His care
Concl: It is a question that irks and frustrates us.
We want to see good things happen to good people, we want to see reward for those who choose to serve our God.
Yet, injustice keeps getting in the way.
