Introduction
This short speech has two independent sections.
The first (25-27) is an address to the Father
The second is an address to those following Him
About Jesus

Begin Point 1
25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“At that time” ties this short speech to what has come before, the woe’s pronounced on the cities that rejected Jesus’ message.
Lets dissect this passage a little.
There are two groups of people discussed in this passage as well as two others
The two others are Jesus himself, referred to as “the Son” and God the Father, referred to as both “Father” and “Lord of Heaven and Earth”
The two groups of people are “the wise and understanding” and “little children”
“The wise and understanding” are those, like the cities that rejected Jesus, fail to acknowledge their need of Jesus
The little children are those who realize that they cannot care for themselves and repent in faith to follow Jesus
Jesus makes a statement about God, “you have have hidden these things from the wise and understanding”
What are these things?
Jesus teaching and preaching (Gospel)
The teaching here is difficult for some because we feel like it is not fair. We will come back to this but remember last week, God does not owe salvation to anyone.
Jesus makes a second statement about God, He has “revealed (these things) to little children.
Those whom God makes the gospel clear to are those who realize their need, not those who think they have no need.
Now look at vs. 27, We now hear how the little children are chosen, it is the choice of the Son
Man’s response to this is, as we said earlier, that it is unfair, but that is not how Jesus sees it.
Look back to verse 25
Jesus declares, “I think you Father”
verse 26, “for such was your gracious will”

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus invites people to come to Him.
He specifies who, “all who labor and are weary and heavy laden
these are those who have labored on their own and realize that they can’t do it on their own.
This is in contrast to the heavy yoke placed by the Pharisees
There is still a yoke (29)
what is a yoke?
Follow Jesus’ example “learn from me”
I am gentle and lowly in heart
Jesus, despite giving a yoke, is the only way to truly find rest
His yoke is easy and His burden is light
II. Following Jesus, while there is a burden, is far better than carrying the load ourselves so be encouraged to keep going (28-30)
