WHAT IS CULTURE?

1) Culture is full of Intangibles

Ex: Atmosphere, Presentation, People

2) Culture is full of Values

Ex: Creativity, Excellence, Encouragement

John 13:34–35 ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

HOW DO YOU CREATE CULTURE?

1) Being Intentional

A healthy culture never happens by accident

2) Being Selective

Culture is a combination of what you create and what you allow

3) Being Convicted

Nothing shapes your culture more than your values

Your values determine what you do

If you want to change your culture, change your values

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUES?

Values should be memorable, practical, and inspirational

1) Positivity

I value optimism over pessimism. I will encourage those around me. I will reject negativity.I will see the good in all people and situations. I will lead with joy in my heart and have fun doing it.

I will strive to see the good in all people and situations. I will lead with joy in my heart and have fun doing it.

2) Dependability

I value consistency over inconsistency. I will keep my commitments. My yes will be yes and my no will be no. I will lead as someone who can be counted upon.

3) Teachability

I value learning over ignoring. I will receive feedback humbly, regardless of who says it. I will never stop learning, growing, and improving. I will lead with self-awareness.

4) Integrity

I value honesty over dishonesty. I will not exaggerate or deceive. I will stand up for what is right with a spirit of grace. I will lead faithfully.

5) Humility

I value gentleness over arrogance. I will not always win arguments and make my opinion heard. I will surrender my pride. I will lead through meekness.

I value meekness over arrogance. I will not consistently seek to win arguments or voice my opinion. I value a broken spirit rather than a prideful one. I will lead through gentleness.

6) Adaptability

I value the future over the past. What I am a part of is bigger than the part I play. I will be a team player. I will not create division. I will lead with flexibility.

7) Sensitivity

I value sympathy over apathy. I am committed to the one lost sheep. I will speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. I will lead with love.

I value sympathy over apathy. I will be committed to the one lost sheep. I will major on the majors and minor on the minors. I will be a voice to the voiceless. I will lead with love.

8) Generosity

I value giving over taking. I will freely give my time, talents, and treasures to others. I will not give unless it costs me something. I will lead with open hands.

GOAL: Recruit according to values, not talents

APPLICATION

Three ways to determine your most important values...

1) What does your behavior say about your beliefs?

Unhealthy cultures claim certain values but their actions prove otherwise

2) What do your key leaders value?

1) What breaks your heart?

Ex: Bullying. You value the marginalized.

2) What makes you angry?

Ex: Laziness. You value hard work.

3) What drives you to change?

Ex: Disorganization. You value excellence.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR CULTURE, CHANGE YOUR VALUES

John 17:21 NLT
I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
Luke 15:3–7 ESV
So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
