Introductions: Everyone say their name, grade in school, favorite activity outside of academics
My own introduction:
- From Ohio
- DTS student
- Twin brother, younger brother, younger sister
- Favorite activity: tennis
Prayer
Who has ever had an embarrassing moment? Who has ever been nervous about something, e.g. test, sports activity, etc.? Who has ever had something go completely wrong, and it made you look kind of ridiculous, bad, or something was your fault?
How did this make you feel?
THere is a huge temptation to make it look like you have everything put together, and you know everything and you have this perfect life....
Funny story about me whistling
-When i was younger, i would have freaked out and never been able to stop thinking about that
-I would have become super self-conscious, analyzing everything anyone said or did for the rest of class
-When i was younger, i had created identities for myself… to try and be the most perfect kid/student/young adult that i could be… on the outside
-What do I mean when i say I created identities for myself?
-All i cared about was how people saw me and what they thought of me… Was i a good student? Was i a good athlete? Did i have good (cool) friends? etc.
-What kind of identities do you make for yourself today?
-It can be a temptation to start relying on these identities… especially when everything is working out! But what happens when things don’t work out? And that is what i want to get into tongith
-Two weeks ago, Pastor Glenn taught us about King Saul… A man who God had chosen to become King of Israel
-What happened to Saul—> Anyone remember? what is the story? what happened? He began to become more worried about what others thought of Him rather than God. He was more focused on the identity of being king. He no longer identified himself as God’s servant/chosen King, rather he viewed himself as the sole leader/ruler. So when problems started to arise, things only got worse for him because he wouldn’t find his identity in God. He became jealous/angry/bitter
-The story of Jonah—> Anyone remember? What is the story? What happened? He was so focused on himself… and not his identity in God, he ran away. The foundation he was standing on himself… and he couldn’t stand any longer.
-The same thing can happen to us…
-When we have our “whistling” moments… thats ok… because even though we might look foolish, even though we might look a little different… and maybe we even made a pretty crucial mistake… our God is still with us. Our God still loves us. When you find out that you got a bad grade on a test, performed poorly in a sport… or even found out that that one particular boy/girl doesn’t like you… maybe you did something pretty bad… It is easy to get bogged down. It is easy to feel like your world is falling apart…
Illustration:
Resting on the foundation of Christ. Finding your identity in Christ. Bring folding chairs… having volunteer lay on them. Begin taking one from the center… then from under the head… and then the feet....
Use books to symbolize things that we aspire towards
This is what it looks like when we find our identity in things other than Christ.
It has got to be all Christ!

35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Having our identity in Christ doesn’t promise us that everything will always go right, and we will never make mistakes… but when we do have our identities in Christ.... it no longer matters what everyone else thinks of us! It only matters what our loving Father thinks of us…
