15. again begins with Therefore. This is the term Paul is using to break the passage down into thought patterns. the term begins in 4:1 and has continued to this point. in the previous paragraph Paul was telling the Ephesian to Walk according to light not according to darkness. that is what he is pointing back toward.
4:1-6 walk in a worthy manner
4:7-16 walk in unity
4:17-25 walk in holiness (likeness of God)
4:26-32 walk in truth
5:1-6 walk in love
5:7-14 walk as children of light
5:15-21 walk as wise men
15 be careful how you walk
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise.
16 make the most of your time
Each person is alloted a certain time on this earth. Don’t waste it.
why do this?
the days are evil
who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
17 don’t be foolish
understand the will of the Lord
How?
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
God is not playing “hide and seek”. Anyone who truly seeks Him will be able to find Him
18 contrast = don’t get drunk (this is excessive or debauchery)
(he does not control himself, rather the wine controls his actions)
rather be filled with the Spirit
as the believer is yielded to the Lord and controlled by Him, he increasingly manifest the fruit of the Spirit
each believer is to have all of the Spirit, but here the idea is that the Spirit has all of the believer
19 being filled with the Spirit has four results
communication with one another
with psalms
with hymns
with spiritual songs
communication with the Lord
in the heart
20 thanking God the Father continually for all things
ability to submit to one another
21 ability to submit to one another
because of the fear (reverence) for Christ
be wise men giving the ability to submit to one another and to communicate with God
