Longed-For

The Gr. term for “longed-for” refers to the deep pain of separation from loved ones.

Brothers

In the larger framework of Paul’s theology, the familial relationship of brothers and sisters in the Christian community springs from the gift of adoption as children in God’s family through the redemptive work of God’s Son ().1

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born dof a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Remember: not primarily Jewish Audience
No longer does Paul have a spiritual hierarchy: Jews above Gentiles; faultless Hebrews above clueless Hellenists (3:5–6). His frequent use of the vocative address, brothers and sisters, points to a true friendship among equals.1

As I have loved you:

The only ground of God’s love is his love. The ground of God’s love is only and wholly in himself. There is neither portion nor proportion in us to draw his love. There is no love nor loveliness in us that should cause a beam of his love to shine upon us.

Our Love of man is connected to our love for God and from God.

Church, Love in

There is a story about a man who was walking down the street. He passed a used-book store, and in the window he saw a book with the title How to Hug. He was taken by the title and, being of a somewhat romantic nature, went in to buy the book. To his chagrin, he discovered that it was the seventh volume of an encyclopedia and covered the subjects “How” to “Hug.”

Everyone knows that the church is a place where love ought to be manifested, and many people have come to church hoping to find a demonstration of love—only to discover an encyclopedia on theology.183

Longed-For

Joy

Paul affirms throughout the letter that they are his source of joy (1:18–19; 2:17).
And he takes pride in their partnership (1:6; 2:1; 4:15)
and citizenship (1:27; 3:20) with him.

Crown

The Gr. term for “crown” refers to the laurel wreath received by an athlete for winning a contest () or by a person honored by his peers at a banquet as a symbol of success or a fruitful life. The Philippian believers were proof that Paul’s efforts were successful (cf. ).

But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. Now as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed.” And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them. Stand Fast
He doesn’t butter them up to tear them down, but in light of false teachers, heavenly citizenship, and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He desperately wants them to stand fast.
