Repentance
“Say to them, ‘As I live!’ declares the Lord God, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?’
"Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord God, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?'
One of the most important and misinterpreted of the gospel messages is the message of repentance. Mankind has made many ways to come to God that excludes repentance and turning from his dead ways.
Mankind has made many ways to come to God that excludes repentance and turning from his dead ways.
When I was in South Africa, a fine, handsome Dutchman came into my service, and God laid His hand on him and convicted him of sin. The next morning he went to the beautiful home of another Dutchman and said to him, "Do you recognize that old watch?"
"Why, yes," answered the other. "Those are my initials; that is my watch. I lost it eight years ago. How did you get it, and how long have you had it?"
"I stole it," was the reply.
"What made you bring it back now?"
"I was converted last night," was the answer, "and I have brought it back first thing this morning. If you had been up, I would have brought it last night."
Gipsy Smith,
John Wesley wrote a hymn titled, “Turn, Why Will Ye Die?”
True repentance Is not just saying sorry but turning.
True repentance Is not just saying sorry but turning.
but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been scattered were in the most remote part of the heavens, I will gather them from there and will bring them to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’
but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been scattered were in the most remote part of the heavens, I will gather them from there and will bring them to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’

The life of a Christian must began with repentance and continue that way.
We must find repentance as a friend that will always lead us to Jesus.
Repentance is an attitude that must be maintained.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
For God to perform his perfect work in the believer it is important that one has the attitude of brokenness before God
Humility is born out of repentance.
We are not to have a sin complex or to be worm. But be open and humble before God and others. Ready to acknowledge our faults and sins, ready to accept the responsibility of our attitudes, and actions.
One of the hardest things for a man to do is admit he is wrong.
Repentance is accepting full responsibility for what one has done or for what one is and admitting his failures.
Repentance brings one to the end of himself
Repentance is the kryptonite for pride
Repentance prepares the heart to receive God’s grace and salvation.
Repentance prepares the heart to receive God’s grace and salvation.
Without proper preparation, the Word will not find place to spring up like a seed, the ground must be prepared for the seed.
Repentance as used in the Old Testament is
To turn, to return, to turn back
For thus the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
“In repentance and rest you will be saved,
In quietness and trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing,
For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
“In repentance and rest you will be saved,
In quietness and trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing,
New Testament word repentance means
To change one’s mind
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Repentance is an inner change of mind resulting in a turning back or turning around to move in a new direction.
Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Repentance is an inner change of mind resulting in a turning back or turning around to move in a new direction.
As you see here true repentance bears a fruit
(Tell the story of the lost son or the wasteful son or Prodigal son)
He made a decision
He came to his sensed v 17
I will get up and return to my father’s house. V 18
2. The prodigal son acted on his decision and returned.
He got up and came to his father. V 20
The sinner must stop going away from God, he must change his mind and turn around; he then faces the light and his sins.
when he does he will finds in the light forgiveness, cleaning, and Gods acceptance.
2 directions of repentance
2 directions of repentance
A change of mind as regard to God.
Repentance brings one to the understanding of who God is.
3 things repentance brings
3 things repentance brings
1. Repentance bring a change of mind regarding the Law of God.
Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
2. Repentance brings a change of mind regarding the nature of God.
And You can not look on wickedness with favor.
Why do You look with favor
On those who deal treacherously?
Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up
Those more righteous than they?
13 Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor. Why do You look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they?
Repentance chooses to be conformed to the image of God.
3. Repentance brings one to weep for his sins.
12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping and mourning; 13 And rend your heart and not your garments.” Now return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness And relenting of evil.
“The sinner is blinded as to his state before God, repentance receive the truth about one’s self and about God. This truth receive turns one to God.” Dr. Carroll Thompson
Yet even now,” declares the LORD,
“ Return to Me with all your heart,
And with fasting, weeping and mourning;
13 And rend your heart and not your garments.” Now return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness And relenting of evil.
And rend your heart and not your garments.”
Now return to the LORD your God,
For He is gracious and compassionate,
Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness
And relenting of evil.
The sinner is blinded as to his state before God, repentance receive the truth about one’s self and about God. This truth receive turns one to God.
True repentance turns from dead works.
Repentance from dead works
1 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Dead works are...
1. All religious activity that is done to cover sin.
6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
For all of us have become like one who is unclean,
For all of us have become like one who is unclean,
And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us wither like a leaf,
And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
2. All works of the flesh.
8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
and those who are in the flesh can not please God.
and those who are in the flesh can not please God.
3. All work of suffering.
10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

10 But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband

there is no substitute for repentance. Man’s religious activity lifts him up in Pharisaical pride.
here is no substitute for repentance. Man’s religious activity lifts him up in Pharisaical pride. Repentance realizes one’s own bankruptcy of righteousness and turns solely to God.
Repentance realizes one’s own bankruptcy of righteousness and turns solely to God.
God grace works according to the measure of repentance.
20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
The deeper the work of repentance, the deeper the work of God’s grace in the life.
The deeper the work of repentance, the deeper the work of God’s grace in the life.
1. Repentance brings a hatred for sin.
Key to overcoming sin is a hatred for sin.
9 “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
“YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS;
2. Repentance comes by being focused on His grace.
THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU
WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS.”
2. Repentance comes by being focused on His grace.
God’s goodness cause one to repent.
4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
The reign of grace comes as one turns from his sin.
b. The reign of grace comes as one turns from his sin.
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
God’s grace works through repentance. The reign of grace in one’s life come through an attitude of repentance reflected by a humble and meek spirit. Sin and grace do not reign together rather grace will rule out sin.
God’s grace works through repentance. The reign of grace in one’s life come through an attitude of repentance reflected by a humble and meek spirit. Sin and grace do not reign together rather grace will rule out sin.
Repentance is the message of God to the people. For there to be a healthy relationship it must include repentance.
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Repentance prepare the way of the lord.
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight.’ ”
THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
`MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.’ ”
1. God will only come in on a straight path .
2. Making the path straight is man’s responsibility.
Repentance prepares the heart to receive the Gospel.
1. The gospel is to be received with brokenness.
44 “And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
“And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
The stubbornness and rebellion of the heart must be broken in order for the gospel to have power.
The gospel is received with submission,
Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand.
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The kingdom denotes submission authority. Repentance prepares the heart for god rule.
Repentance is the first responds of man to the Gospel.
The message is repent and believe
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
True repentance must always go with true faith.
21 solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. Faith is dead without repentance
2. Faith in Jesus as the Son of God does not save unless accompanied by repentance.
3. Faith is an empty profession without repentance.
4. Faith cannot work in an unrepentant heart.
5. Faith come out of the heart prepared by repentance.
6. “only believe” is not the message of the Bible.
“I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
