Sanctification - Your Character and Conduct

1 Thessalonians 4:3 KJV 1900
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
1 thess
The teaching of sanctification is the most misunderstood teaching in the Bible.
Its really about what Christ has done in you!
Who are you....
Look in the mirror ....
Illustration - filming nannies in NYC ......
They were shown the films and were shocked at what they saw.
that was the real people that is who they are
It is not taught due to fear of being called a legalistic or offending people.
Acts 20:26–29 KJV 1900
Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
The words sanctify - come the Greek root word that mean to place in relation to God answering to His holiness.
In the OT it mean to cut or separate.
This separation is because of something else.
The sanctified person has been first chosen then separated.
Because of x y happens .....
Sanctification is a result of a changed person through salvation.
Illustration
A soldier has certain conduct in the battle. he listen to orders, the follows the commander, he does his particular job.
He does not do all those things because he is becoming a soldier or he want to be a soldier he already is one.
He became a soldier at boot camp.
He conduct now is one of a soldier
Key terms to understand
Regeneration - -nature (born again)
Justification - standing before God (not guilty)
Adoption - position before God (His child)
Sanctification - Character/Conduct
Key to understand:
Justification is what God does for us ; sanctification is what God does in us!
In 1948 the father of New Evangelism stated we need to repudiate separation.
Pragmatic - the ends justify the means
The goal is souls and salvation even if principals of the bible are violated.
This movement has so permeated every area of Christian service: missions; music; book publishing; and higher education.
today if you preach of Christian conduct or character you are immediately labeled a legalist or holding to man made tradition
Music can change - piano was a saloon instrument
Dress can change - wigs and Victorian dress
screens and digital presentations - OK
That all being said Christian conduct and character should never change.

I Sanctification is a Cleansing

2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV 1900
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Titus 2:11–12 KJV 1900
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
titus 2.
The believer should forsake the patterns of the world and follow the patterns of holiness with Jesus Christ as the model.
This is a condition of the heart that expresses itself in an outward cleansing.
Some however, express sanctification by subscribing to legalistic standards man made standards and codes without a heart change. That is Pharisaism
Cleaning - illustration
Running - smelled a skunk!
It stinks and i could not what to get into the shower and clean up. My nose and temperament told me to clean up.
Sanctification - its this that from the inside out changes your language, take the booze and drugs out of your procession. It this change that convicts you about lying, gossip, and treating others fairly. It this change that effects how you present you body to the world in dress and style.
When i recieved Christ - my priories changed. No one made me do this it was a cleansing from God.

II Sanctification Begins with God

Galatians 5:17 KJV 1900
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Romans 7:18 KJV 1900
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Flesh wars against the spirit
You must never think that sanctification will be accomplished by sheer human effort.
Ken Collier - “The Holy Spirit of God uses the Holy Word of God to make you like the Holy Son of God”
Its an inner change that can not be manufactured!
Illustration
It’s not what I do or don't do it’s who I am!
The world will never understand this !

II Sanctification Requires Your Participation

Romans 6:19 KJV 1900
I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Romans 6.19
Philippians 2:12–13 KJV 1900
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Phil 2.12
Illustration - football camp training
Studied the films, lifted the wights, stood for the national anthem etc.....
Now its time to acts.

IV Sanctification Works from the Inside Out

2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV 1900
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
changed - metomorpho this means a change in essence not just presence!
God states repeatly in scripture that he desires a Godly heart not just right conduct.
You must understand this portion of the message!
Are Christian Standards of conduct important? Yes.
Yet them must be the result of a sanctified heart , not a substitute for it.
God’s desire for your life is not just a change of habit - he desires a change of heart.which will bring about a change of habit.
What I asking you to Know
Sanctification “your character and conduct” are changed by God after salvation.
The world will never understand this !
