1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NKJV
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NKJV
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

What are Spiritual Gifts?

There are diversities of “Gifts” = Charisma
Charisma = gifts of God’s grace, favor bestowed
But the same “spirit” = Pneuma
Also “pneumatikos” is translated as “spiritual gifts”
So then, Spiritual gifts are gifts of God’s favor or grace which are bestowed

Spiritual Gifts are “Gifts” not “earnings” or “entitlements”

1 Corinthians 12:5 NKJV
5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
1 Corinthians 12:4 NKJV
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There are different kinds of gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit - From God
Different ways to administrate these gifts but the same Lord
for instance sometimes Jesus administered healing through speaking a word
sometimes through touching them
sometimes through giving an instruction
Also there were different ways the prophets expressed their messages from God
But all of these “administrations” come from the same Lord

Different kinds of spiritual gifts

These “gifts” come in a number of manifestations
this is not an exhaustive list
Word of wisdom
Word of knowledge
Faith (gifts of faith)
gifts of healing
working of miracles
prophecy
discerning of spirits
kinds of tongues
interpretation of tongues
These Gifts of the Spirit are not the only gifts of the spirit
There all work by “one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man individually as He will”
1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
So “
So here again he says “to every man”
So these gifts are available to every Christian
God is no respecter of persons
Yet they are “given” not earned or taken
Distributed to each person “as He (God) wills
Examples of Spiritual Gifts in action:
Acts 3:6–7 NKJV
6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
Here is a gift of healing & miracle (since never having walked it would have been impossible apart from God)
Acts 5:3–5 NKJV
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.
ac
Peter had a word of knowledge, and perhaps discernment of spirit
Also a gift of prophecy is active here, since Peter is speaking for God
Acts 5:15–16 NKJV
15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
acts5.15-
numerous spiritual gifts were active here as the needs were present
healing, miracles, discernment, casting out sprits, faith, miracles of drawing the people
Acts 9:40 NKJV
40 But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.
miracles
healing
and it was known throughout all Joppa and Peter stayed many days there
Acts 10:44–47 NKJV
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?
gifts of tongues
miracles of salvation also
Acts 16:16–18 NKJV
16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.
gifts of discernment
gift of knowledge, and faith
faith in casting out the demon
Acts 21:8–11 NKJV
8 On the next day we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. 9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. 10 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ”
act
gifts of prophecy
by Phillip’s daughters
and by Agabus
Also, a different way of using the gift by Agabus-
And many other examples of Spiritual gifts both in the Old testament and the new Testament
Such as Sampson, Saul, Samuel, all the prophets
Numbers 11:2–22 NKJV
2 Then the people cried out to Moses, and when Moses prayed to the Lord, the fire was quenched. 3 So he called the name of the place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord had burned among them. 4 Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat? 5 We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!” 7 Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium. 8 The people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, cooked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and its taste was like the taste of pastry prepared with oil. 9 And when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it. 10 Then Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and the anger of the Lord was greatly aroused; Moses also was displeased. 11 So Moses said to the Lord, “Why have You afflicted Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I beget them, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a guardian carries a nursing child,’ to the land which You swore to their fathers? 13 Where am I to get meat to give to all these people? For they weep all over me, saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’ 14 I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and do not let me see my wretchedness!” 16 So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18 Then you shall say to the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the hearing of the Lord, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19 You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have despised the Lord who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, “Why did we ever come up out of Egypt?” ’ ” 21 And Moses said, “The people whom I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month.’ 22 Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to provide enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to provide enough for them?”
num11
Numbers 11:27–29 NKJV
27 And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, “Moses my lord, forbid them!” 29 Then Moses said to him, “Are you zealous for my sake? Oh, that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!”
So then, Spiritual gifts might be described as:
Supernatural abilities, or supernatural knowledge that is given to a person by an act of God’s grace, which allow that person to either do, or speak, or receive something or things which they could not have done, spoken or received without this special favor and power of God.
These gifts can be one time manifestations, or an ongoing gifting
for example, Sampson’s strength was a gift which he receive which he could use at will until it was taken
People who have received the gift of tongues generally do so at will
Spiritual Gifts in the New Testament
Would to God that all the Lord’s servants did prophesy

Spiritual Gifts given to the disciples, and by extension to you

Luke 10:18–20 NKJV
18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
luk10.
Luke 24:49 NKJV
49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
luk24-49
John 7:35–38 NKJV
35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?” 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
John 7:37–39 NKJV
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 7:37–40 NKJV
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. 40 Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”
Acts 1:8–10 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,
Although these are “gifts”, they are not earnings or entitlements as mentioned earlier
they are also not “prized” - they are not random
You cannot “earn” them, but you should desire them
You cannot earn them, but you should strive to be worthy of them
Acts 8:14–21 NKJV
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God.

Spiritual Gifts cannot be bought with money or works
1 Corinthians 14:1 NKJV
1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
we are instructed to “desire” Spiritual gifts
Desire especially to prophesy - to speak for God, or God’s will
Later told to “covet to prophesy, and not forbid tongues”
Who does God give Spiritual gifts to?
Although they are “gifts” they are not automatic
Why do some people receive gifts and others seem not to?
Why do some people who have received gifts, or been used in spiritual ways, seem to grow and be used much more, while others do not, and some just kind of fizzle out?
Who does God give Spiritual gifts to?

Why do You want Spiritual Gifts?

What will you do with the gifts if you receive it?
What will you do with it?
For example: when I was doing street ministry, many people asked for money for food....
but I declined
Yet, I was willing to feed them
Was willing to do so as a gift
But why did they want the money?
to consume it upon unworthy things
to use in a way which would not honor the Father
Also, we often give food away to family in need
recently gave more than 2 tons of food -
Yet, when people take more than they need in order to sell it, we do not allow it
It matters what they will do with it
Also, some people could not even come to our free meals - because of behavior, etc.

Some people do not receive Spiritual gifts because their motive is wrong

Is it so that you can be the hero? Or God can be glorified
Is it so that people can know God and be saved, or just so you can be a good guy in blessing people?
Consider Peter and John when the crippled man was healed
Or Paul when the man at Lystra was healed
Or Jesus after the miracles in Capernaum and other places
Sometimes God says “no”, are we listening for those times?

Some people do not receive Spiritual Gifts because they refused to use them when they were offered

Sometimes we are afraid to step out and speak, even when we know God has given us a Word
Sometimes we are afraid to move forward and act even when we know that God has given us an unction
While God is very patient, and His gifts and calling are irrevocable, if we do not take heed what he says, it can be lost.
there are many impotent Christians, or pseudo Christians in the world now, who have talked themselves into believing spiritual gifts are gone, because they were afraid to act when they first believed.
Mark 4:18–22 NKJV
18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” 21 Also He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand? 22 For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.
Mark 4:24–26 NKJV
24 Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. 25 For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” 26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground,
Let us commit to God: Lord, we want to be used by you
Lord we want to be endued with power from on High
Lord we want to receive gifts of the Holy Spirit
Lord we want to prophesy in Your Name
Lord, we commit, if you will give us your gifts, we will use them for your glory
We will not stand still nor be silent
We will speak what you give us to say, we will do what you give us to do
Stretch forth your hand through us, that sign and wonders be done in your name, that people will be healed, delivered, and saved,
And that Your Name may be known and glorified.
Amen.
