Scripture5-18
Matthew 16:13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?”
>Now just as it was then, there are many Ideas about who Jesus was and Theories about the resurrection. So many theories about what Jesus had come to do and how he intended to accomplish his work.
>One Disciple answers in V. 14 Some say you are John the Baptist. We know what had happened to John, we read about it in the 14th chapter of Matthew. He was beheaded. But there were those who believed that John had recovered his lost head and was now going by the name Jesus.
>Another said also in V14 that Jesus was Elijah, one of only two men recorded in the Bible not to have died a physical death, some believe that after being caught up in the whirlwind, orbiting the world for centuries was now put back on earth and was ministering under the name Jesus. And some said he was Jeremiah or another one of the prophets reincarnated and prophesying under the name Jesus.
In V 15 Jesus said; “But who do you say that I am?” To what conclusion have you 12 come to. What have you 12 concluded, you have followed me through Galilee, You heard me preach the sermon on the mount, I have delivered countless parables explaining the secrets of the kingdom, and now in the final Galilean campaign after feeding the 5000, after I have walked on water, and calmed the storm, brought sight to the blind, healed the cripple, cured the sick, who do you say that I am.
And in V16 Peter replies: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” >In other words, The Messiah, The anointed one, Prophet, Priest, KING! Greater prophet than Moses, Greater priest than Aaron, Greater King than David. The one for whom all of Israel has been waiting for centuries. The promised seed of Abraham, David’s Greatest son. The Christ, Son of the Living GOD. > In What Peter said he was absolutely right.
In v17 Jesus said to Peter “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (Notes)
V:21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
He told then about the cross, Calvary, But he said don’t worry on the third day I will be resurrected. Does this shock us today, surprise us in any way, No its old news, Jesus went to Jerusalem, was tried, crucified on a cross and on the third day was resurrected and rose again. Sure we know that.
Jesus gave Peter a preview of the messianic mission. To lay down his life, a ransom for many, delivered for our sin, our offense, but to be raised again for our justification. Therefore the firm foundation upon which you and I alone may have any confidence whatsoever of being accepted by a holy God for the guilty lost sinners we were. But just as he gave Peter this view, Peter begins to rebuke Him.
V:22 And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you. Peter is saying nonsense Lord that can’t happen we wont let it. Don’t you worry I Peter will make sure it does not. In V.23 Jesus turns to him and says, “Get behind me, Satan! The same man who just minutes before had been acknowledged as the mouthpiece of God was now the mouthpiece of the devil, Satan himself. And Jesus said “You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men.” Notes
Matthew 16:18 And I tell you on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
