Introduction

A
Acts 17:16–21 AV 1873
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
Do you ever just watch people? Not creepy people watching. Just seeing what type of people they are, and how they walk. Sometimes you can tell as a couple walks together, what kind of day they are having. Do you ever think of how their day has gone. How did she get so angry with him? Why does he have no clue that she is angry? Sometimes, when Ashley is shopping, I will find an opportunity to sit on a bench and just see the people that surround us. We do not just float as Christians, who people are should matter.

Pause

Acts 17:16 AV 1873
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
Moments of silence without distraction can cause us to think in ways we never believed possible. These are the times for prayer and connection. We live in the distraction age. An age where we find and purchase more and more distraction. Even churches fall into this amazing pit, where a thing or a program becomes more important that the Christ who died for the church. Sometimes we just need to stop, pause our lives long enough to reflect on what is going on around us, what is going on in the political arena and even what is going on with the best people we know. Take time to observe.
The song, “Take Time to be Holy” says,
1. Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord; Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word. Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak, Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.
2. Take time to be holy, the world rushes on; Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone. By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be; Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.
3. Take time to be holy, let Him be thy Guide; And run not before Him, whatever betide. In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord, And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.
4. Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul, Each thought and each motive beneath His control. Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love, Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
Psalm 27:14
Psalm 27:14 AV 1873
Wait on the Lord: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say, on the Lord.
Moments of silence without distraction can cause us to think in ways we never believed possible. These are the times for prayer and connection.
Philippians 4:6 AV 1873
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Psalm 27:13–14 AV 1873
I had fainted, unless I had believed To see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say, on the Lord.
Do not forget in your time, to remember that God is good. His grace will always sustain you! He will give you enough for today, and enough for tomorrow. He will always provide the necessary amount of grace for the circumstance He has called us to.
Isaiah 40:31 AV 1873
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.

Ponder the Plight of Others

Acts 17:16 AV 1873
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

Postulate the Gospel with whomever will listen

Acts 17:17–21 AV 1873
Acts 17:
Pause long enough to ponder what is happening in the lives of others. Then postulate with them the Gospel. There will be some who refuse to discuss it at all. Others will just like to hear about something new, but still others will hear the truth and believe.

Postulate here means

“to suggest (something, such as an idea or theology) especially in order to stat discussion”
Acts 17:34 AV 1873
Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
Believing follows the acts of postulating (discussing) the gospel.

Conclusion

How much time do you take with the Lord? To wait on Him and allow Him to lead you?
How often do you ponder the plight of others, knowing that in many instances and cases, they are headed to eternity in Hell?
Those two things ought to lead you and I to postulate, or discuss the Gospel with as many people who will listen. Often we are so focused on us, that we neglect the focus God has for us. Is that you?
