Galatians 2:1–10 NKJV
1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me. 2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain. 3 Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. 4 And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage), 5 to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. 6 But from those who seemed to be something—whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows personal favoritism to no man—for those who seemed to be something added nothing to me. 7 But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been committed to me, as the gospel for the circumcised was to Peter 8 (for He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the circumcised also worked effectively in me toward the Gentiles), 9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.
Remember from chapter one, we learned that Paul’s apostleship and authority came from God and not people?
Today in chapter two, we’ll see that these came also, or are affirmed by the church in Jerusalem which sent him out to proclaim the Gospel.
This most likely coincides with this account found in
Acts 15:1–21 NKJV
1 And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question. 3 So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren. 4 And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them. 5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.” 6 Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. 7 And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: “Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, 9 and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” 12 Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles. 13 And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, “Men and brethren, listen to me: 14 Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written: 16After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up; 17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the Lord who does all these things.’ 18 “Known to God from eternity are all His works. 19 Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”

Notice that he took Barnabas and Titus.
These two are probably mentioned to give credibility to his message.
Barnabas was his mentor.
Acts 11:25–26 NKJV
25 Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
Acts 11:25-
Acts 13:1–3 NKJV
1 Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.
Acts 13:
Titus is probably mentioned because of his Greek heritage. We’ll see in a minute what Paul says about Titus in verse 3.
Notice that Paul says he went to Jerusalem because of a “revelation.”
He was responding to what the Lord was telling him, not man’s invitation.
And first he privately sees “those of reputation.” Who might he be talking about?
Galatians 2:9 NKJV
9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
He goes to the “most important” people to confirm his Gospel message.
Why is it that you go to the “mover and shaker” first?
We’ll talk to the boss at work, the pastor at church, the coach, or the mom?
These people have influence!
Verse 2 says
lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain.

Paul is saying, “I wanted to run it by these guys in order to see if they were in agreement with my message, because if they weren’t there is no point in telling the rest of the church.”

Publicly (3-5)

Paul reminds them the the Gospel is by grace alone through faith alone through this statement found in verse 3.
Let’s look to for a reminder of what happened publically.

This was tough for the early church! There was no difference between Jew nor Gentile!
We don’t really struggle with this in our context, but in a sense we struggle a little bit here in this church with race issues.
I still hear occasional comments that are disparaging regarding African Americans.
Turn with me to for a reminder.
Ephesians 2:11–12 NKJV
11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands—12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
What’s interesting is that Paul calls these folks out!
Acts 15:1 NKJV

24 Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, “You must be circumcised and keep the law”—to whom we gave no such commandment—

13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:26 NKJV
26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
Galatians 1:7 NKJV
7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
Notice the dichotomy here:

Check out Paul’s example: “to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour”
Why? “that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.”

Personally (6-10)

God shows no personal favoritism with man.
Check out how Paul affirms his ministry using what he did previous with those of influence.
Guys, it’s okay to be strategic. All effective leaders are strategic in their leadership. Leading from the hip is unwise.
Paul talked with the leadership, got their approval, and cashes in right here.
