Prophet

Hebrews 3:1–2 NKJV
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.

Speaks the words of God

In the Old Testament, the prophet was the mouthpiece of God to the people. In fact, the prophet often prefaced his words by saying, “Thus says the Lord.”

Deuteronomy 18:18 NKJV
I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
Deuteronomy

Authority

Matthew 7:28–29 NKJV
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Truth

Jesus pronounced an end to all our sin

Spoke the words of indictment against the people for their sin ()
Called them to repentance (v. 18)

The prophet pronounced the forgiveness and pardon of God ()

Jesus, as the final and sufficient Prophet, has done all of these for us

He came not just proclaiming the Word of God; He is the Word of God ()

He came to the world because of sin ()

Teaches the people of God

Matthew 19:16 NKJV
Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

Priest

Hebrews 3:1–2 NKJV
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.

Sacrifices

As Priest, Jesus offered Himself as the sacrifice for all our sin

In the Old Testament, the high priest was the mediator between the holy God and His sinful people

High priest entered the Holy Place and offered a sacrifice to God on behalf of the people once a year on the Day of Atonement ()
He sprinkled the blood of the sacrifice on the mercy seat “because of the uncleanness of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins” ()
This he did year after year after year

Christ, as our Mediator and High Priest, not only offered the sacrifice (once and for all), but He is the sacrifice

Christ entered the Holy Place

He entered to offer Himself

He had to enter only one time

He sprinkled His own blood on the mercy seat

Hebrews 7:26–27 NKJV
For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

Intercedes

Mediator

King

Luke 23:3 NKJV
Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”

As King, Jesus rules in such a way as not to allow sin to reign over us any longer

In the Old Testament, the monarchy was established for the peace, prosperity, and welfare of the nation

Wayne Livingston
The prototype king was David
No king was ever as beloved as he was
With David on the throne, the nation of Israel could say, “All is well.”

We have a King greater than David

Christ came in the line of David as David’s son and yet also as David’s Lord ()

He is “the ruler of kings on earth” ()
He is “King of kings and Lord of lords” (19:16)

As our King, He has fought our battles and now rules in such a way that sin never can reign over us ().

His Kingdom is Internal & Spiritual

He rules in the hearts of believers

We can live spiritually victorious lives

1 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

His Kingdom WILL BE Open & Physical

Joh
John 5:22 NKJV
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
Revelation 19:16 NKJV
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
