Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,
To Philemon our beloved fellow worker
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
Ph
Whatever your in its by God’s design
*Paul a prisoner of Christ Jesus: This is very unusual for Paul's letter .
*He normally refers to himself as the “Apostle of Jesus Christ”
*Philemon was evidently a beloved friend and supporter and friend of Paul.
*Philemon was so commited to Christ that he was a laborer for Christ.
This is the only one of Paul’s epistles in which he referred to himself in the salutation as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. In seven of his epistles he called himself “an apostle”; in two of them (1 and 2 Thes.) he used no appellation, and in three he referred to himself as Christ’s “servant.”
*Philemon was evidently was a dear friend that Honored Paul for who he was.
He dint have to establish his call to the ministry to Philemon
Philemon was so dedicated to the things of God that he was counted “beloved” by Paul himself
In fact Paul calls him “Dearly Beloved”
He was not only a “Brother but he was a worker.
Don’t be saved and satisfied
and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house:
Can God use your private possessions for His public ministry ?
For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.
1 Cor 26:
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;
God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,
1 Cor 1:
Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.
Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers,
because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints,
and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.
For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.
*Philemon:affectionate, friendly: One who kisses
*Paul really gives us a lesson in conflict management
The Compliment stage verses 4-7
It takes Character to forgive
*We see the Spiritual Character of the one who forgives
Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required,
yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus—
*For loves sake:
*Appeal: urge , encourage a response or action.
Disciplining isn't telling you what to do but rather putting the ball in your court.
True Love teaches and guides
I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment.
Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,
To Philemon our beloved fellow worker
*Paul softens the blow by saying that Onesimus is his child
(Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.)
*Onesimus: means helpful, profitable and was frequently given to bond- servants
*Play on words
Only through the New Birth can I live up to my name.
*Onesimus: was a transformed man :Paul’s point is that Onesimus had been radically transformed by God’s grace.
*Onesimus: was a transformed man :Paul’s point is that Onesimus had been radically transformed by God’s grace.

I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart.
Philemon 12
He has some unfinished business
I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel,
Philemon 13
but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own accord.
For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever,
Temporary pain for a permanent reward

no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me.
If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account.
The Spiritual Action of One who Forgives
Restitution:The Restoration of something lost or stolen to its proper owner.
I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self.
The Spiritual Motivation of One who Forgives
Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.
Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.
Phil
At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you.
Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you,

and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers.
