Who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?
My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him.
He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!
But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.
Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people.
He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave.
But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands.
When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.
I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.
Why would God allow his son to be treated this way
Think of someone you do not like ! (That did not take long did it?)
Think of someone who has really hurt you in life
Think of allowing harm to come to your child so love could be offered to them
(and no guarantee they will receive it)
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
Scripture is even baffled by it:
what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority— the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.
Jesus’s opinion of people
When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd.
What were those people he was looking at like:
sinners!
What do sinners look like:
people hating each other because of their race or religion
People stealing and hurting each other
corrupt officials
Corrupt religious leaders ( living wealthy lives at the cost of the people)
Greedy / dangerous / dishonest people
and
People who had been abandoned by life - in the cracks
People who were ill with no one to help them
People with emotional wounds and broken hearts
Jesus opinion of the rebellious and murderous people of Jerusalem
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.
Why is God so insistent about reaching us with his forgiveness and love?
1)Because he wants us to be with him
When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.
What parent does not want their estranged child to be back in relationship with them?
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
2)Because he wants to help us
What parent does not want their estranged child to be back in relationship with them?
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

Because he wants to help us
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
3)Because he does not this to happen to us
And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Today we celebrate the great gift that Jesus has given us
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
