Fear God, and fear not. Pack Light.

Dismiss the kids.
dylan reads

12 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

Have No Fear

4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

8 “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, 9 but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Lets pray.
Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving weekend. I hope that you will be able to spend time with friends and family this weekend, as I have already. We have my wife’s family with us this weekend and I have been eating well!! I have as you do, so much to be thankful for! As of late I feel like the list is growing. Sometimes you dont know how thankful you are for something until you loose it.
Lately I’ve been hyper aware of and thankful for my health! Late in the summer I tried keeping up with a couple guys in our church who love downhill biking, Shane and Tim. And on a early morning ride at Night Hawk I went over the bars and tore some ligaments in my left shoulder.
Now anything I consider doing I have a risk analysis happen inside my head. Like, Im all healed up now, but I cant even look at my bike!! And every time I think about going skateboarding all I see is a list of potential injuries. But Im thankful, it could have been worse, much worse. But I will go again, just with a renewed respect for the sport.
As I thought about this experience I saw that there exists a healthy fear... that leads to respect and appreciation. And then another that is crippling to my outlook on life, and holds me from all Life has to offer...
I dont think that there is a person here that has not been affected by the news of this past week in relation to the shooting in Las Vegas.
And in watching the news and hearing those sounds, it changes you. For myself there was a personal connection, a trade partner I used to work with while in construction, his daughter life was taken in this seneless tragedy.
And as I consider all these things, you get a sense that the world is tumbling faster out of control than you can catch it.
So what would God have us learn from all this? I believe there is a connection between what was read this morning and what happened this past week.
Luke 12:4–7 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Luke 12:4 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.
The gunman, the fallen, you , me and the world inbetween will give an account of our time here. There are those in this age that fly a flag of their own authority to say this “I have the power to TAKE YOUR LIFE.” And they seek to strike fear in the hearts of men. And that IS EVIL, but ANY authority that is not under the authority of Christ is dangerous. It might be a job title, the number in your bank account, maybe this pulpit, Maybe The home you have, the number of homes you have or whatever it is that would give us a feeling of authority and independance apart from Christ needs an anchor. There is a fear that keeps our lives in order, and it is the Fear of God.
The bible says “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” And this morning wisdom is crying in the streets over the senselessness of this tragedy. We have been praying and will continue to pray over this tragedy.
This morning we are going to be looking at the Fear of God, the Fear of man, and how those two effects everything about the way we live.
Last week Jared talked about knowing the truth, knowing the Word and rightly discerning it.
The Fear of man is not only the panic of what someone can do to you. On a day to day level it is a fear of what others see in you.
But the Fear of God calls this into account...
Luke 12:8–10 ESV
“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
(I read this and it changed the way I pray.)
10-12- Fear of man is the end of man, No forgiveness, hardened, no hope, gone. A dispossion of the heart that says no to the leading of the H.S. and God cant forgive the heart that is closed to Him. That’s why we plead with God, for the souls of our loved ones, that He could speak louder than the voices in their lives.
10-12- Fear of man is the end of man, It leads you to a place where we leave the voices in our life drown out the voice of God. And when you can no longer hear God, there’s no need to acknowledge Him before others. I say that it is the end of man because the make up of the heart that can no longer acknowedge God, will not be acknoweldged by God, although God calls for them, they no longer have a place for Him.
This is why we plead with God, for the souls of our loved ones, that He could speak louder than the voices in their lives. And as we fear God more than the voices calling out to us. We become that light, when we value Him as he ought to be. (Work on transition)
The fear of God is a response to whats been done for us in Christ. We feel the weight of what it means to be forgiven (no hell, no shame, made clean), and in response youre not going to embarrass your saviour by leaving him out of your life. (transition needed)
And God has a response for those who fear Him, as you and I walk into the unknown of what it means to acknowledge Him in the presence of men. What do you know, He is there with us
Luke 12:11–12 ESV
And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Luke
The Fear of God has open arms and open hearts, Why? Because
Fear of God- knowing His all powerful voice in the midst of obscurity. 12:12- He will have the words for you to say.
The Fear of God allows us to open our arms and open hearts, Why? Because when there’s nothing left to fear, theres nothing left to loose, and you can give, and serve and live without giving a hoot about the world and what it has to offer. You can live wildly aware, your heart breaks when it needs to break, and rejoice when it needs to rejoice because we know whats at stake, and that life is short. (?)
And it is with that sentiment that Jesus tell’s a parable.
12:13-15- Calls Jesus teacher, but asks him to be a judge. Your job is not judge those around you and have a final word over their life, your job is to know the truth and point them there.
The Loudest voice in your life get’s the most attention. A man in the crowd that day was listening to Jesus, but fro all Jesus said, this man was drowning in His own thoughts. There was another voice in His life and it didn't matter how loud the sermon was. It was the fear of loosing out. Somebody owed him something. And while Jesus was teaching, He was stewing.
Loudest voice in your life get’s the most attention. And a man in the crowd, listening of the one who can put body and soul away forever, listening that nothing covered will not be revealed, ect ect. Was not listening for his own heart but rather was building an argument against his brother… Do we have ears for the voice of God to US this morning.
And Jesus said this… “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” LIFE IS NOT ABOUT ACCUMULATION< ITS NOT ABOUT GETTING STUFF.
So Jesus said this… “Take care, and be on your guard (Jared nailed this last week… KNow the truth “be on your guard) against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” LIFE IS NOT ABOUT ACCUMULATION< ITS NOT ABOUT GETTING STUFF.
HE told them a parable,
“ The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

(low tone)
Sometimes we spend too much time and attention hovering over the decision’s of someone else’s life, like the brother and His inheritance , but we wont answer to the decisions of “the other” whoever they are. You will give an account for you and you alone.
Before we move forward at all. I need everyone here to recognize we all represent the Rich man. We live in the richest province of the richest nation on
Looking back a the parable…There is a question that the rich man had, and it is telling of where any of us are today.
It’s no sin to be given opportunity in this life, many of us have, its what we do with it that defines us.
He asked “What shall I do.” and the question we should be asking is “God, what shall I do”
There needs an anchor in the plenty and the pain.
And God’s response to this man has a jarring, but appropriate effect on me “Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you prepared, who’s will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
When you know the end, it changes how you live in-between. When you live in the light of eternity, it changes you fundamentally, because you realize that time is short, and the time you have is God given. So we live can live intentionally, and without fear.
I sense at times in my own life and the people around me that we get anxious about
And Jesus is concerned of two things about my life.
1. The first we have been talking about is that we live in appreciation and respect for God (The fear of God) 2. The second is that we without fear.
After this parable Jesus directed His attention back to His disciples, because there was a sense of anxiety, and maybe some of you are feeling it this morning… As they heard all these things they might have thought “Jesus??? I know that you are powerful, I know you have authority, and I don’t want to deny you, or be on the wrong side… But who’s gonna take care of me? my family, and what about the next tragedy? what about my personal tragedies.
Jesus knows every last detail of our lives and He has not dropped the ball. And as anxious thoughts tightened around the neck of His disciples, he said this to them, and to us this morning, hear the voice of God here today.

22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

It means everything to God that you would no longer fear life, or death He gave His life to afford it to you. The small details of what we do, eat drink wear and even to number our hairs are inside of His care, and the big things, the biggest things have been taken care of. The one who has the power to cast your soul into Hell, has provided escape through the death of His son. And that was His good pleasure. This God we fear, loves us unbelievably much.
And he has given us a purpose in this life, but we will not fulfill it if we live in fear. There is a world out there and in here that needs to see that life is more than food, clothes and a paycheck.
And we gotta live that for them fearlessly.
12:32 is a command (the verb is an imperative), FEAR NOT. Its function is to be an anchor in the ocean of of your life. And After everything is stripped away, whether its the walls you’ve put up to keep people out, or the heartache that you are living in, or the pain this world is reeling from This is your anchor.

“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
Do not fear this world or what it can do, Your Father has taken care of you. Both now and forever.
And the Bible even speaks to this, “a workman is worthy of His hire.”
But what I want you to see this morning was that the greatest work done for all mankind, was without defect, was perfect and with no detail left unchecked. And it was absolutely free.
It was God’s pleasure to make you apart of His kingdom without working for it at all. So why are we striving to work for a kingdom that is going to pass away.
In this journey into the Kingdom, the lighter you pack the better. Instead of seeking the possessions to put them away in a basement closet, Seek the Kingdom, and what you need will be added to you, that is a promise from your Father. And I dare you to try Him in this.
