The health message

To the delegates of the General Conference session of 1909, Ellen White wrote:
"The health of the body is to be regarded as essential for growth in grace and the acquirement of an even temper. If the stomach is not properly cared for, the formation of an upright, moral character will be hindered. The brain and nerves are in sympathy with the stomach. Erroneous eating and drinking result in erroneous thinking and acting" (9T 160).
“Our physical health is maintained by that which we eat; if our appetites are not under the control of a sanctified mind, if we are not temperate in all our eating and drinking, we shall not be in a state of mental and physical soundness to study the word with a purpose to learn what saith the Scripture --what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Any unhealthful habit will produce an unhealthful condition in the system, and the delicate, living machinery of the stomach will be injured, and will not be able to do its work properly. The diet has much to do with the disposition to enter into temptation and commit sin.” (Ms 129, 1901 in CD 52)
“The body is the only medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character. Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers. His success here means the surrender to evil of the whole being. The tendencies of our physical nature, unless under the dominion of a higher power, will surely work ruin and death” (MH 130).
It is not made to save us, but to encourage towards healthier choices in life. Ellen White knew we are not saved according to what we eat. Although he/she follows correct health practices as a "sacred duty," yet in the act of obeying nature's health laws and basic health principles, the Christian "earns" nothing toward his salvation and eternal life. Salvation is not a matter of eating and drinking ().

You are what you 8

The Dr Randy Bivens says;
The human body can live up to 120 years. Meaning that most of you are just over middle aged.
Live longer and more satisfying lives
Our journey together this week
As Randy said, this is a journey, so this week we will be journeying through
4 of the 8 health laws.
You will hear from Dr Randy on a particular health law
And I will share a short gospel devotion in conjunction with which ever law is discussed.
Can we pray?
So why health? Why do a morning devotion on health?
Health changed my life:
Very unhealthy 120kgs, lack of confidence, always angry etc.
No confidence
Then: I Lost 40kgs and life started to make a change for the better.
I was this healthy person, however, still had unhealthy habits like. In a way my confidence grew in a way that wasn’t Christ like, and my anger was still the same. However, my body was healthy.
It wasn’t until I met Jesus who completed the health message for me. I dedicated my life to Christ, and He took my anger from me, I don’t how but he did, and the confidence that grew unhealthily, he took that and has been teaching how I can be confident in Him....
God also thought that I needed help in life, so He sent my beautiful wife and we have together a beautiful little 9 month old who is just a great child.
I then became a personal trainer and strived for 6-7 or so years now to bring faith and fitness together. Well deeper into the Adventist church, because I am a first generation Adventist, I stumbled across a powerful message that you had for over 150 years ago...
This all generated from health...
Life for me is a blessings to live, I don’t have it all down packed, I am still learning a lot about life and in ministry, but it is a blessing to live life, and I strive to look forward to Gods awesome plans.
Which is the health message, Right!
it is ....
it is ....
Ellen White received a message that would not only physically change people, but lead people to a complete change. Jesus Christ.

The Health Message:

I am so glad that we have this message
"The health of the body is to be regarded as essential for growth in grace and the acquirement of an even temper. If the stomach is not properly cared for, the formation of an upright, moral character will be hindered. The brain and nerves are in sympathy with the stomach. Erroneous eating and drinking result in erroneous thinking and acting" (9T 160).

To present in a simple manner.

What is it?

I heard that the Health Message was not unique to Ellen White...I heard many people of her day had a similar health message some had less laws and other had more. The mormons had a health message, roughly around a similar time…so it was not unique sunlight, air and some of the others. BUT....
What was unique was, her was her ambition and drive to always connect physical health with spiritual health. She presented the gift given to her by God which was the gospel wrapped up in the health message.
Listen to her words as she presents the health message

She was awesome at making the gospel, the heart of the health message.

1 Timothy 4:8 NKJV
For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
John 10:10 NKJV
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
3 John 2 NKJV
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

Context

The Bible Guide The Elder Greets Gaius (3 John 1–4)

This is a personal letter—unlike 1 and 2 John, which are written to a group of people. The elder says that he has received good reports about Gaius, and knows that his soul is ‘getting along well’!

Chapters 8-9 are connected with 10.
Jesus had just dealt with one of the biggest issues of his ministry, healing on the Sabbath.
()
This damage to the church will come from unscrupulous teachers. They will introduce false and unnecessary rules of self-denial—such as staying single or living by a strict diet. Needless to say, they have no instruction from God for this—and no intention of keeping such rules themselves.
The Pharisees see him healing a blind man, which was on the Sabbath. () 1) Spat on the ground made mud. 2) Go Wash
Why?
Now Paul discusses a prophecy. The Holy Spirit warns that some believers will be deceived by evil spirits and abandon their faith.
MAIN IDEA: is one of the most theological chapters in this Gospel, though often misunderstood. The Lord had entered an intense period of conflict and opposition to his ministry, as his enemies analyzed every word with the intention of punishment. He repeatedly alienated the Pharisees and yet drew his own flock closer to him with teaching sessions just like this one
Instead of taking care of these people, the religious leaders are like thieves or robbers who break into the sheep-pen.
Paul encourages Timothy to give a lead in these matters. He is not to leave it to those who are older or more experienced. He is to keep his own life in good order and be an example to others
Spat on the ground made mud. 2) Go Wash

Spat on the ground made mud.
In the face of false teaching, Timothy can teach the truth of Jesus. Jesus affirmed our human nature and life in this world by living fully to the glory of God. Timothy will set people free with the truth—cutting through the myths and fables which bring fear and superstition. Physical fitness is good if you can do it—but spiritual fitness is even better. Godliness lasts for ever.

Complication

Jesus is dealing with very tough leaders who had judged this man who was blind at birth.
Jesus was not allowed to heal on the Sabbath.
Instead of taking care of these people, the religious leaders are like thieves or robbers who break into the sheep-pen.
Mentions the issue at hand.
They are all watching Him.
The sheep are scattered
Jesus is annoyed by sharing Sheep/ shepherd which our text come from. (
Jesus is annoyed because these so called leaders because they were not doing what they were called to do, in fact they did the opposite.
The shepherds are feeding themselves.
There will be a shepherd who will gather these lost sheep and lead them to good pastures.
They have judged this blind man, and left him to live the rest of his life blind.
In most of chapter 10, Jesus is emphasising and an illustration that was very familiar with them. Farming language, and....
So this is when Jesus has come to the point of scripture where he says;
comes to what I think a pinnacle point of chapter 10 and says....
John 10:10 NKJV
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Paul is attacking teachers who deny the good things of life. They tell their followers to apply rigid self-control. Behind this is the idea that this world and our bodies are bad. The world must be avoided and our bodies must be punished. If we try hard enough, we will escape from the pull of earthly desires and become spiritual enough to go to heaven. Perhaps the Gnostics of the next century, with their secret information and mystic passwords, have something of this approach.
What does the message have to do with health?

In the same sense; God has given us such a message that it encourages us to open up our minds so that we can think clearly, and function well.
That blind man: Could not see Jesus for himself, but it wasn’t until he was healed, he could now see and experience his saviour.
The Health message brings healing and a life that is abundant.

But the devil seeks to destroy all of Gods blessings. He steals, distorts and take away quality of life.

The blind World: The blind are those who have not yet seen Jesus for themselves.
God has given us such a message that it encourages us to open up our minds so that we can think clearly, and function well.
The world is sick
The health message is given to us which was to bring health and healing to people.
The world has a distorted vision of Christ
If they only knew that Christ wanted healing for them.
They would see a better picture of Christ, and know that He cares for them.
The heart of the Health message is Christ.
Engage in healthy habits they can think clearly. We can bring healing through the health message like Jesus did heal the blind man.

The health message is an entering wedge to Christ.
Workout together: many times, I find myself talking to young people, in or out of Christianity about life. Many conversations then lead to they use to go to church etc. I made friends with a guy names Tony who has 3 kids and a wife, and studying law. We often talk about life and God.
“The body is the only medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character. Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers. His success here means the surrender to evil of the whole being. The tendencies of our physical nature, unless under the dominion of a higher power, will surely work ruin and death” (MH 130).
I tell him many times that it is my dream to open up a fitness studio where I can help young people, by mentoring them and leading them in a better direction.

Because you put them in a church they will struggle to listen, you put them into gym, do a workout with them, and all the walls fall down.
Tony: I don’t know where the path will lead but hopefully, and prayfully that he will come back to Christ.
We will go through the 4 of the 8 health laws. Hope it encourages you to see that importance of applying it to your life.
It is an entering wedge to conversations…that will, I believe, lead to an abundant life with Jesus Christ.

How is he doing that today?

We have lost so many young people to the fitness industry.
So many of our friends have left the church because of the fitness industry.
They say that 60% of young people leave the church, I think parts of the reason why is because they find a greater sense of community in boot camps, crossfit groups, and these other fitness initiatives which run every single day of the week.
But the end result is scary because the are left without a Saviour.
The devil has hijacked the gift, and created a curse, but Paul does speak directly at the issue here in
1 Timothy 4:8 NKJV
For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
We need to out things in the right order.
Not listening to false teaching.
The culture of self: It has taken the driver seat to their morals and ethicals values.
Take it back and show how to live it.
Our health message, the gift of God that was given to us. For us to take it with 2 hands and do what God has given us the power to do.
Present, and live the health in the way it was intended. 2nd to our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

Conclusion
Healed - blindman
The world took it, and highjacked it.
In hope that people will finally see the God who cares about his people and heals them.
It is for us to take back the message and present it in the light of the gospel.
Giving life abundantly
A life with God is the only life worth living.
Take back the message that God has given us.
Put it in the right order.
First in our lives.
Then in others.
