18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools,
and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,
and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,
being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,
slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;
and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
In this passage of scripture that we are looking at today ...
This is man’s history from God’s Viewpoint.
We see that Man has chosen the ways of godlessness and unrighteousness, and refusing to acknowledge The Creature.
He reaches a point where God gives him over to corruption, reprobate mind, and man turns from the natural to be consumed by the unnatural.
To corruption, reprobate mind, and man turns from the natural to be consumed by the unnatural.
The key word tonight is exchange.
This is a sad capture in the history of man.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
romans 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
Notice wrath, orgē (or-gay) meaning properly desire
So wrath of God means judgment.
Wrath of God from heaven. This point to God view point.
This point to God view point.
Notice this wrath is against all ungodliness and unrighteousness.
Ungodliness or godlessness - asebeia (as-eb'-i-ah) meaning wickedness.
unrighteousness moral wrongfulness of character, life or act
so notice God is giving his viewpoint on Ungodliness and unrighteousness.
It goes on to say of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.
Suppress means - to hold back, hinder, prevent, hold down, suppress. Literally to hold down the truth.
Literally to hold down the truth.
Immoral living will hold down and destroy truth. “Truth can survive swords, it can battle down ignorance and overcome prejudice, but truth is defeated in immorality… Truth can only live in the minds of people as it lives in the lives of people; and when it dies in the lives of people, it dies in the knowledge of people.” Unknown person
he is referring, in this quote to the loss of truth.
How do we lose truth?
Lets keep reading verse 19
19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
Because that which is known about God is evident within them;
Who is the them?
The ungodly or the unrighteous
For God made it evident to them.
What has he made evident?
The truth.
Verse 20
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
So look at the truth.
So look at the truth.
God reveals Himself in his creation and creation itself declare who God is.
Creation itself declare who God is.
1. His invisible attributes are made known by creation. Creation expresses beauty, harmony, peace, and order.
2. His eternal power is made known by creation. Creation expresses the power of God.
3. His divine nature (Godhead) is made known by creation. Creation can only exist because of a creator.
A person can understand the invisible by the visible. (Hebrew 11)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old gained approval.
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old gained approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
he 11
Hew 11:1-2
So notice what man does.
Man willfully ignored “His invisible attributes, and His eternal power and divine nature” as revealed in creation. The creature rebelled against the Creator and chose to live apart from God. This is ungodliness. The result of the choice is unrighteousness. Dr Carroll Thompson
21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

3. Man lost his identity as he lost truth

Godlessness is to chose to live apart from God, relieving one’s self of all responsibility to a Creator. The results are very clear. Man becomes a fool, loses his glory as he exchanges the glory of the Creator for the creature, his mind becomes reprobate to the point that he leaves the natural to be consumed by that which is against nature. Homosexuality is given as the example of that which is against nature.” Dr. Carroll Thompson
