New Birth…New Way

This morning I want to pass along a challenge on behalf of James.

James 3:13 ESV
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.
• 2 Engage: Are you willing to become that person? Are you willing to embrace the lesson of wisdom? It is within your grasp. You don't have to be a grizzled veteran,

James uses wisdom in much the same way Paul talks about the Holy Spirit. In these verses he echoes specific terminology of Jesus regarding the New Birth and the movement of the Holy Spirit in effecting it in our lives. Today's Text connects with three other very specific NT concepts:

Jesus' prescription of the New Birth:
John 3:3–8 ESV
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

These passages are connected by shared vocabulary. The technical word-play coined by Jesus: born again/from above. James wants us to know that wisdom is connected to the work of the Spirit in those who are born again. Again James connects with familiar words of Jesus when he echoes

Jesus' commendation of Spirit-led living:

• 3.2 Jesus' commendation of Spirit-led living:
Matthew 5:3–12 ESV
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

These passages are connected both by shared vocabulary and ongoing christian development and understanding of basic concepts first taught by Jesus. Surprisingly to some James’ list of the virtues of wisdom also reminds us of similar, and again familiar words-this time brining to mind

Paul's description of the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22–24 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Like Jesus and Paul James reminds us that there are two alternatives.

1 The Rebellious Wisdom of the Fallen.

James 3:14–16 ESV
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

▾ Shut Down:
You should bear the clear impression of the Father who has made your new birth a reality.
If you don’t bear fruit, if you do not cultivate Godly attitudes, if you don’t show the imprint of God’s Spirit in your life…you are not born again, you are not a Christian and you need to give your life to Christ. Wisdom in your daily, ongoing, basic, real, life shows that God’s Spirit has marked you out as His very own.
James challenge: show the whole world that God is at work in your life and His Spirit is in control.
Is today the day that you say, once and for all I need His restoring, reviving, renewing, rebirth-and I need it today.
