Where is the Harvest?

harvest is work
corn doesn’t pick itself
we see problems but by obedience at work (harvest) we will find blessing
LAST WEEK:
relationships & forgiveness
tough one to do but huge blessings on the other side
forgiving doesn’t mean that you forget or that the pain is gone but that your heart has changed about the person who hurt you
get there by praying and then by recognizing that because God forgave us that we forgive others
Philippians before we look at our main text for today
Book of Acts we can see in Acts what Paul was doing
Letters show what he was thinking
Philippians 1:12 ESV
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel,
Philippians 1:19–20 ESV
for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.
Progress
I need sense of progress to keep working
that’s why marriages fail
How do we make progress?
effort = progress
BUT NOT EFFORT ALONE
Maggie at school after sick
struggle & worked hard without progress = discouraged
Passion won’t do it alone either
I’ve been passionate about things yet unscuessful
effort + Direction = progress
Horse trip when I went the wrong direction 2 hours!
getting there fast we just ended in the wrong place b/c there was no direction
Where are you headed?
Letters show what he was thinking
Philippians
Began with what has happened to me
changed to what it means to me/why
faith is like interpretation
doesn’t change what happened to me but it’ll change what we do with it and why
we need to know the why
we have been put on earth to glorify God
decided the why before the what
the what in life has led many of us into a bad place in life
in response to life we have sought relief
found temporary relief in sin
We’ve tried to play it safe but in doing so we are not pleasing God
Philippians 1:12 ESV
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel,
can you say that about your life?
John 5:1–6 ESV
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”
John 5:1-
* missing v. 4 (we will come back to that)
It is crazy how people come to church regularly with no intention to change
many are not afraid to
me at the doctors office previous health issue
we come to church and would like to see God change our circumstances but not willing that He would change us
For a minute stop asking for your boyfriend to change
boss to be nice
kids
Psalm 51:10 ESV
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalm 51:10–12 ESV
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
create a clean heart in me oh God
not do you want to feel better but get well
student ministry they haven’t learned this false idea that adults have that “some things never changed”
v.4 From time to time an angel of the LORD would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had.
sometimes this is what we are waiting on
for God to come down
the man laying on his mat was at a disadvantage
that’s just like religion
first one
we are now in grace and he starts at the back of the line
kids this isn’t the way to get what you want
we are asking God in the wrong way
John 5:7 ESV
The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
everything that he said was true
jew-Samaritan
I can’t get to the water
the water came to me
breakthrough begins where excuses end
water-no bucket
John 5:7 ESV
The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
well an offer
everyone else is the problem
no one helps
John 5:8
others beat me to it
jews worship here-samaritans worship there
John 5:8 ESV
Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
your waiting for God to come down but God may be waiting for you to get up
*NICK*
John 5:9 ESV
And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
The longer you have laid there, the harder it will seem for you to get up
you’ve never believed in the saving power of Jesus / have believed but never applied
GET UP
you have allowed sin to rein and rule in your life… GET UP and WALK in a newness of life
HE HAS A NEW WAY FOR YOU A NEW LIFE WILL YOU GET UP?
