Supporting Our Deacons
Scripture:
Acts 6:1–7 NKJV
1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Summary: A message delivered as a charge to the church on the occasion of the ordination of new Deacons.

This passage not only speaks to the qualifications for new Deacons (v. 3 - faithful, reputable, spiritual, maturing, responsible), but to the primary purpose for Deacons in a local church. The purpose for Deacons is to guard the unity of the church.
In the Book of Acts, Satan attacks the church in many different fronts. He attempted many forms of direct opposition and intimidation, and he tried to corrupt the church from within. Here, Satan hoped to "divide and conquer" by raising one group in the church against another.
The Hebraic Jews were those inclined to embrace Jewish culture and were mostly from Judea. The Grecian Jews those more inclined to embrace Greek culture. It is thought that many of these had come as pilgrims to Jerusalem for the Passover, and after Pentecost, simply remained in Jerusalem as a result of their conversion.
For the most part, Hebraic Jews tended to regard Grecian Jews as unspiritual compromisers with Greek culture and Grecian Jews regarded Hebraic Jews as holier-than-thou traditionalists. So there was already a natural suspicion between the two groups, and Satan tried to take advantage of that standing suspicion.
Apparently, some of the Grecian Jews believed that the widows among the Hebraic Jews were receiving better care.

Satan loves to use an unintentional wrong to begin a conflict. The Grecian Jews may have been right in their hearts, and the Hebraic Jews may have been right in their facts; but these are the perfect conditions for a church-splitting conflict; and that's how Satan was trying to halt the work of God in and through the early church.
In an article called, "Nine Thoughts on Church Splits," Lifeway President, Thom Rainer speaks of observations he has been able to make regarding modern church splits. Not all of these observations fit this situation in , but three of his observations certainly were true of this potential split in the early church
A. They typically originate from power groups in the church.
The power group may be a formal body or they could be an informal group that still wields great power in the church.
B. The negative community impact is great and enduring.
Rainer, writes, "I have done interviews of community members where a church that split is located. The merchants and residents often say, 'Oh that’s the church that fought all the time until it split.'"
C. A church that has split is likely to die.
Many of congregations hang on tenaciously. But after awhile, the cancer of the split eats away at the health of a church body. I have conducted many church “autopsies.” The beginning of the death of these churches often took place at the point of the split.
We see Satan working in the life of the early church to get two groups to fighting so that the early church might split, thus turning what was a positive impression in Jerusalem into a negative one, and leading, not only to the death of the early church, but to the death of Christianity itself. But God intervened. And he did so through the leadership of the Apostles and the service of the first Deacons.
This brings us to the primary role of Deacons. Now, men who are ordained as Deacons are typically men who are already very busy within the life of the church. We don't set aside men as Deacons because they need to get busy serving. Typically, that's already true of them, and that's why we select them. No, Deacons are selected and set aside with one special task to perform - and protecting the unity of the local church.
This is why we trained these men in peacemaking principles. This is why our staff meets with our Deacons monthly - so they can up on what's happening in the church family and be able to explain it to folks who have questions. Unanswered questions can lead to unhappy church members, which can lead to upsetting conflict. People are down on what they're not up on. Additionally, I look to our Deacons for council and advice, which is why I run things by them and why we have a Deacon Advisory Team, consisting of our Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and the three previous Chairmen, who council me regarding issues that could cause concerns and potential conflict in our church family, and, when necessary, act as mediators when conflict between members threatens the church fellowship.
These first Deacons obviously did their work well (read verse 7).
How can we help these men do their work well?
1. Pray for them.
Who is it that seeks to split churches? Satan. Therefore, the work of guarding the unity of the local church is spiritual warfare.

10 And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. 11 So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. 12 This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. 13 Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. 14 Truth, righteousness, 15 peace, 16 faith, 17 and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. 18 In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.
"Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace." - (NLT)
Ken Sande, the Author of the book, "The Peacemaker,” points out that the phrase, "Make every effort" literally is a military term that could be translated, "Strive like a warrior."
This further reinforces that guarding and protecting and promoting unity with the local church is not only spiritual warfare requiring prayer, but this verse also tells us that to support our Deacons, we must also . . .
2. Partner with them.
"Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace." - (NLT)
In , we are told what the priorities of the Apostles were, which, I submit, were the priorities of the entire church.
In other words, through this conflict, Satan was seeking to get the early church to focus inward toward their problems, instead of remaining focused on the world around them and its problems.
The service of the Deacons was to address the issue within the church in such a way as to preserve unity and focus on reaching a lost world for Christ.
In an article entitled, "The Anatomy of a Church split," Dr. Dan Reiland sums up his writing my stating what he believers is the greatest proactive measure to prevent a church split. He says, "Reproduction is what God had in mind for all living things. Whether it is an oak tree, or a human being, or an elephant, they were all designed to reproduce their own kind. A church is a living organism and no different. The point is (to) focus on how God wants you to multiply your ministry."

"So the preaching about God flourished, the number of the disciples in Jerusalem multiplied greatly . . ." - (HCSB)
Literal Greek of the above two verses is plethuno, which means "multiply."
Conclusion: So what is the best way we as a congregation can support these men who are being ordained tonight, not to mention each of our Deacons as they seek to carry out their ministry?
1. Let's pray for them, because they are on the front lines of spiritual warfare.
2. Let's partner with them in striving to maintain unity with our church and in keeping the focus of our church on a world that still needs Jesus.
THE ORDER OF THE TOWEL
INTRODUCTION
One old cliche says, “Familiarity breeds contempt.” It doesn’t have to be true, but all too often it is. We have read this text before. Can we give it a second look?
Perhaps it doesn’t need interpretation as much as implementation. The accent is on following this example of our Lord:
1. It’s one thing to see a leper, it’s another thing to touch the leper.
2. It’s one thing to hurt for the demonized, it’s another thing to exorcise the demon.
3. It’s one thing to sense a need to pray, it’s another to spend all night in prayer.
4. It’s one thing to see hungry people, it’s another to feed them.
5. It’s one thing to see dirty feet, it’s another thing to wash them.
so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."
Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." NIV
C. Jesus didn’t say this with a miserly heart.
III. IT IS A PERFECT STATEMENT OF HIS CHARACTER
A. The statement was made at the end of His ministry, and they (the disciples) knew that it was an accurate personal testimony.
B. The statement truly represented Him. There was no false egotism here. There was no, “I’m humble and proud of it.”
C. The statement reflects what a crucified mind can do to create an environment of transformational leadership
IV. DEACONS WERE CREATED TO BE THE PASTOR’S HELPERS (Servants) (Waiters on tables)
A. To Help Relieve the Pastor of the material cares of the church so that the Pastor may have more time to give to the spiritual welfare of the flock.
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. NIV
B. To Help Keep Down Trouble in the Church
1. Deacons were elected when murmuring arose
2. Never be guilty of starting trouble
CONCLUSION
There were no chief seats for James and John, but there were plenty of cups.
We should be as wise as James and John and commit ourselves to being able—even before we know what true service is all about.
