LAST WEEK
LAST WEEK
We looked at the aorist imperative of the command to go
We looked at who the disciples were to go to
We looked at the logistics of being sent
What they were to take
What they were not to take
We also looked at what happens when a city or town rejects you
How they disciples were to treat them
How it would be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah than for a Jewish city to reject the message of the Gospel
THIS WEEK
THIS WEEK
We are going to continue to look at what it means to be sent
What it looked like for the apostles to be sent
What it meant to be a disciple of Jesus
Remember
When you decided to sit under a Rabbi
When you decided to sit under someones teaching
When you decided to follow after a Teacher
You would take on their identity
You would be acquainted with Him
You would be recognized as one like him
So how did Jesus prepare them for this mission?
What was going through the minds of the disciples?
What was the goal of going out?

24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26 Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.
27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.
40 “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
PRAY THAT GOD WOULD GIVE US THE COURAGE TO FOLLOW HIM WITH GREATER PASSION AND FERVOR

Jesus is beginning to paint the picture of what the Disciples will encounter on the mission field
If you are a disciple of Jesus
A student of Jesus
One actively serving Jesus
Don’t think it strange when you are treated just like Jesus was treated
Don’t be shocked when the people that you thought were your peeps, who usher you in with palm frawns, turn their backs on you and yell “Crucify” Him.
A Disciple is not greater than his teacher, Nor a slave greater than his master
Nor a slave greater than his master
Therefore, what makes us think we will be treated better than Jesus was treated?
What makes us think that we deserve to be treated better than Jesus was treated?
If they called Jesus, the master of the House of Satan
What makes us think that they wont call us Satanic
What makes us think that they wont misunderstand us
If we are in constant opposition to with the nature of this world, what makes us think that the world will let us be?
We must remember that we are intrinsically different from this world
Jesus called us the salt of the earth
Jesus called us the light of the world
If our light is shinning in the dark places
The darkness flees because it doesn’t comprehend the light
The darkness is at war with the light
The darkness of this world retreats from the light
A lot of the time
But, when our light is dim, the darkness of this world puts up a fight.
Jesus says
Don’t fear those hating on you
Don’t fear those who are mistaking the light for darkness
Don’t fear those who misunderstand you
Who call you
For there is nothing covered
Nothing that is in darkness
That won’t be revealed
There is nothing hidden
Nothing that you or this world is trying to cover up
That will not be made known
Notice that this is a general statement impacting both parties
The persecuted and the persecutor
It would be a shame for us
To be preachers of righteousness
While living a life of sinfulness
It would be sad for us
To fill our feeds with Christian Jargon
While Using our Social Media Facade to cover up our sinful nature.
Matthew 10:27-
27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.
Matthew 10:27-
THE REALITY IS: The more we hide the darkest parts of our lives, The more will be exposed when Jesus shines his light on it.
THE REALITY IS: The more we hide the darkest parts of our lives, The more will be exposed when Jesus shines his light on it.
The more we hide the darkest parts of our lives, The more will be exposed when Jesus shines his light on it.
The more we hide the darkest parts of our lives, The more will be exposed when Jesus shines his light on it.
The more will be exposed when Jesus shines his light on it.
Now, here is the rad part about God’s Omnipresence
Whether we are in a dark place,
Whether we are in a good place,
Wherever we are in this journey of faith
8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
Wherever you are, God is able to speak
The questions are,
Are you making time to listen?
Are you willing to hear what He has to say?
More importantly, are you willing to be his mouthpiece
More importantly, are you willing to be his mouthpiece
Jesus says, whatever I speak to you in private, or in the dark place
Speak in the light
Whatever I whisper into your ear
Preach from the rooftops
That word preach is Kerysso
To proclaim
Guess what tense it is in?
The Aorist Imperative
Both Eipon/Speak and Kerysso/Preach are in this tense
Making it a non negotiable.
Most of us are scared to preach
We get anxious what we say
We get nervous about how they will respond
We begin to fear what the outcome will be
But guess what is also in aorist imperative tense?
DO NOT FEAR
Do not fear humanity in communicating what God has spoken to you
Do not fear man, or his response to the Good News of Jesus Christ
Do not fear those, who can kill the body, but cannot kill the soul
Fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell
The language that Jesus is using here is interesting
Jesus is making it clear that our only fear should be a healthy fear of the Lord
He makes it clear that we should fear living in continual disobedience
Not only of the things that we should do
But the things that we should do
Disobedience in abstaining from sin is the same as disobedience in abstaining from what He is calling us to do.
Disobedience in abstaining from sin is the same as disobedience in abstaining from what He is calling us to do.
Our only fear should be in living a life where we believe we are going to Heaven, but do nothing about it.
Where we live in the truth of the Salvation that Jesus offers, yet never live into the potential of Salvational Transformation.
We don’t understand that by not living on mission
We diminish our self worth
We think that God’s will is not worth living for
When we doubt that God is on the throne
We forget all the beauty that he has brought out of ashes
When we lose sight of the worth of a Sparrow
We diminish our self worth
When we diminish our self worth
We allow fear to creep in and cause us to doubt the Love God has for us
Matthew 10:32-
But not only that, the worth of the cross
It is imperative that we allow the greatest display of God’s Love, The Cross, to expel all fear and give you the greatest courage!
It is where your greatest value was proclaimed
It is where you were shown how loved you are
It is the place where God relegated himself for your sake
This story
Because God values what Jesus did on the cross
He kindly asks for a response
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
Whoever confesses Jesus before men
I will confess them before my Father who is in Heaven
That word confess is synonymous to Acknowledge
Jesus contrasts that with His denial
If you deny or DISOWN Jesus before men
I will also deny him before my Father who is in Heaven
Didn’t Peter deny Jesus?
Didn’t Peter disown the name of Jesus to a little girl?
Didn’t he do it three times?
Thats a lot of times.
This is why the God of the Bible is so different
Even when we have denied Him in the past
A repentant heart is all that he requires to instill hope for the future
It’s all he required from Peter
And it became the heart of the message at Pentecost
Repent
Be converted
That times of refreshing may come by the presence of the Lord
34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
Matthew 10:34-
34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth.
Matthew 10:34
Many think that this confession will usher in peace on earth
But the reality is that the confession of Jesus Christ will be more of a severing from the world than a union with the world.
Your parents wont get it
Your siblings wont get it
Your enemies wont get it
Your in laws wont get it
And if you let them become the reason why you walk away from Jesus
You are aligning yourself with the reality of verse 37
You are saying that you are not worthy of Jesus
What does that mean?
It means that when our love for people exceeds our love for Jesus, we are not deserving of being His Disciple.
We are not worthy of being His student
Matthew 10:38-
38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
We are un deserving of what He has to offer us
Better yet
If you do not take up your cross and follow the example of Christ
You are undeserving of being his disciple
You are undeserving of being His student
How can we make sense of this if God has called us to love people?
Just like with any relationship, marriage, or friendship
You will love people incorrectly if you dont realize how Christ has loved you
You will love selfishly if you love people according to how you have defined love
You will love with the wront motives when you love people on your terms
BUT
When you have realized HOW you have been loved
Generously
Selflessly
Sacrificially
It is then that you will know how to love with a Christ Like Love
It is then you will have the right perspective when people wrong you
It is then that you will learn to love those whove betrayed you
It is then that you will be able to love unconditionally
40 “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
Matthew 10:40-42
