Is Belief a deep thing or can it be a shallow?
Deep enough to carry us through a lifetime.
Shallow enough to convince us of the next iPhone and to pay full price. (Shallow enough to believe Arkansas played great against USC.)
Belief /Faith - What does this mean? What’s the difference? No difference. Same Greek work. Pistis. Pisteuo.
Hebrews 11:1–2 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation.
Hebrews 11:1
- Hall of Faith. Listen to some very strong statements out of here.
Hebrews 11
Hebrews 11:1–3 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
It’s a conviction.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Without it, you can’t please or bring delight to God.
Hebrews 11:13 ESV
These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
Hebrews 11:13–16 ESV
These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
There’s no shame in conviction/excitement/getting look at weird for something that may not be physical…yet.
Hebrews 11:
Hebrews 11:36–40 ESV
Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
Hebrews 11:
Is your belief worth suffering over? Getting mocked/suffering?
A Puritan prayer once said - Help me to delight more in what I receive from Christ, more in that fullness which is in him, the fountain of all his glory. Let me not think to receive the Spirit (conviction) from him as a ‘thing’ apart from finding, drinking, being filled with him.
Or as the father of a child who was healed by Jesus once said...
Mark 9:24 ESV
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
