Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead), and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen. I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

No Other Gospel

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Ch 1a-what is the gospel (grace, bible)

Intro-when I started working with college students I sat down with a college football player and I asked him this question

0-100 percent how sure are you that you will go to heaven when you die?

Now this football player grew up going to a really good church, went on mission trips.

Here is how he answered the question

50 percent because I am a struggling some right now

This guy grew up in a great church and he answered the question wring

Does it really matter how we answer this question

You see there are all kinds of Gospels out there but only one real gospel

There are many false gospels

Miss the rescue

(4) 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father

Focus on the word rescue or deliver

We really don't think we are that bad. The other day I read about the Oklahoma murder, I was disgusted, I wanted to go and shoot those guys myself. I was angry. However as I started to think about this more we are in need of a rescue just as much as these guys are. We are in need of a savior to save us from our sins, however many times we think we just need to add Jesus on, we don't need to add him on, we need him completely. We won't let go of our riches for the greatest riches

A good guy doesn't need rescue a deliberate sinner does

Rich young ruler

We are evil, we are sinners who need rescue. The Bible doesn't teach we are kind of bad it teaches we are sinners from birth

Would not admit his sin

Ex-rich young ruler he knew Jesus but he did not know Jesus

He left him sad

The gospel-the message that we are more wicked than we ever dared to believe, but more loved and accepted in Christ than we ever dared hope--creates a radical new dynamic for personal growth, for obedience, for love.

Religious gospel- you earn your way to heaven by going to church all the time

It is not difficult to understand why Paul reacted so strongly, because the Judaizers were impugning the Cross; for if works were necessary for salvation, then the work of Christ was not sufficient (cf. 2:21). Bkc

Paul’s usual expression of thanksgiving to God for his readers. Instead he vented his astonishment and anger over the Galatians’ defection. When compared with the opening of 1 Corinthians this is even more striking, for despite the Corinthians’ deep moral defection Paul nonetheless expressed commendation. But here in the face of theological departure he did not express thanks, thus emphasizing the more serious nature of doctrinal apostasy. Bkc
