Isaiah
Timothy 4.3-4
The Bible tells us to reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
Listen to Eugene Peterson’s interpretation and translation of the Greek behind our text.
“You’re going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food—catchy opinions that tickle their fancy.
They’ll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages.”[4]
The Apostle says we can anticipate that some believers will turn away from “healthy teaching.”[5]
They will prefer spiritual junk food because they cannot tolerate healthy food.
This is an ongoing challenge to the teacher of the Word as he seeks to build the Body and strengthen believers.
We must ask ourselves the question, do we want to pastored or pacified.
Tell the story of Jonathan and his pacifier last sunday night.
Isai
Isaiah 5.
Here is some Word from the Holy One of Israel:
Leaders, teachers, saints, church are we able to eat on the healthy, sound, doctrine tonight?
Can we start to understand what being Christlike is all about.
We in the ministry do no good if we pacify, or tickle your ears, but refuse to prick your heart.
It was by this pricking of the heart on the day of Pentecost that revival broke out from Peter’s 1st Apostolic Sermon.
He gave them strong medicine that had to be “endured”.
If these men Peter preached to, walked away from his sermon, they would have never experienced the power of the Holy Ghost!
I know many of you here tonight feeling a pulling to be a leader, but what does Jesus say about leadership?
This should make us reevaluate our “feelings” of wanting to lead others.
Are we doing it to appease the Burden we have for lost souls, OR is it to appease a “feeling” we have to be somebody, or a hidden pride, or is it some kind of special agenda.
Is it something you put on a bucket list, another area in your life that you can feel what the world calls “successful”.
What is behind our motives to be in front of other people?
One minister said this, “The man who desires to lead, disqualifies himself from leadership”.
Pastor talked along the same lines today.
They want the glory they “Perceive” but not the cross!
Tickle my ears, but don’t prick my heart.
They like the idea of being seen as a true servant but don’t want to have the scars that come with weight of carrying your cross.
These people show up when they can be seen, but how are they when they can’t be seen?
Now it sounds like I’m questioning their Integrity.
Doing the right thing even when no is around to see it.
Are we in our prayer closets daily seeking the will of God?
Are we in our Bibles daily absorbing His life giving Word?
Is the heart free from bitterness and judgement of others?
Do we feel like we “deserve” to be promoted into a ministry or position of leadership?
There’s an old song that in short tells us what we truly deserve.
It’s words say,
OH I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CRUCIFIED
I SHOULD HAVE SUFFERED AND DIED.
I SHOULD HAVE HUNG ON THE CROSS IN HIS PLACE BUT JESUS, GOD'S SON, TOOK MY PLACE.
Is this too much steak to eat at one time?
Would you rather have your ministry team stand before you and cater to the opinion of everyone who disagrees with the True Word of God?
I did say “Your” ministry team, because when I was called into ministry, I didn’t view it as a way to be heard or seen.
I didn’t view it as a way to be a leader of others.
I felt the weight of accountability immediately!
That’s why it took me years to Submit to the will of God.
I knew that I was being called to be the least among men.
I understood that I would be a target, my wife would become a target, and my children would be under a microscope!
Many people who never had a cross word with you before, will become opinionated over night, and critical of your ministry you are called to.
It’s amazing how people that never see behind the scenes of leading and pastoring like to be the first to criticize those that are Actively trying to Serve God.
Those who are in the fight are always criticized by those who are on the outside of the ring!
I can remember how easy it was before I had kids to say that my kids would never get away with this or that.
And recall the rude awakening when I realized that I somehow made the very mistakes I said wouldn’t happen!
Until it’s your baby, you don’t truly know it’s full weight.
We can guess, but every parent knows how heavy the baby can become when you realize your world now revolves around the need of that child before all other needs or desires.
And so it is with ministry.
Once you truly submit to your cross and ministry you began to feel it’s weight.
You start to see that your life choices began to center around God and the ministry you are called to.
You should become sensitive enough to hear the call of God at night, when you need to begin interceding for someone you may know very little about.
When you first begin to feel the pull to be in ministry, your strongest impulse should be to save the souls of those that are lost.
Many nights I’ve awaken to sobbing for someone who as lost.
Uncontrollable sobs like a little baby!
I’m being transparent tonight!
I was overcome with a burden to be a soul winner.
I personally want it understood tonight, that I expect our leaders and wannabe leaders to have that kind of burden.
To be driven by that kind of force.
And I don’t mind if God put’s that kind of burden and passion to win souls, fresh on my heart!
I want it.
It’s the driving force for any true man or woman of God.
It takes this burden to carry you into a life of servanthood.
We need this as a people as a church, as a light house to those around us!
Let us see the soul behind the drunkard, the prostitute, the drug addict, or the liberal alike!
