The mission of God is a rescue mission—and He calls His church to be the hope of the world.
Introduction
Remember the last time you experienced a season of life where it seemed everything went wrong? (Examples: alarm clock not going off—late to work; fender bender as you are driving your car; unexpected bill; misunderstood by a friend; a child who makes an unwise decision…)
Centuries ago, when the church was in its’ infancy, one of its’ first leaders, a man by the name of Paul, was experiencing a season of life where life was difficult:
Imprisoned in Philippi
Chased out of Thessalonica
Smuggled out of Berea
Laughed at in Athens
Regarded as a fool in Corinth
Beaten up in Galatia
But, even in the light of all the challenges thrown at him, Paul remained eager to preach the Gospel—the Good News of Jesus Christ. Neither ridicule, criticism, nor physical persecution could curb his boldness.
Why?
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
The Gospel so changed Paul—transformed his life so much—that he counted everything else as “loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus” () his Lord.
The impact of the Gospel reaches into every aspect of our lives.
The Gospel Defines Me!
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel...”
What defines you? Your work? Your family? Your finances? The things you own? Your hobbies? Your popularity? Your personality?
Problem: These things can change. And, when they do, you can easily become discouraged—with your hopes and dreams broken.
But, for the believer in Christ, what defines us is our relationship with God.
The Gospel Defines Me!
The Gospel Defines Me!
I am not ashamed of the Gospel—for the Gospel shapes me—it affects every aspect of my being.
With the Gospel (Good News)
I am reminded that Jesus loves me.
He forgives me.
He promised me a future and a hope.
The power of Sin is broken.
The Gospel Empowers Me!
“For it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek...”
The Gospel is not just words (although the words of the Gospel are important).
The Gospel carries with it the omnipotent power of God!
The Gospel Empowers Me!
The Gospel Empowers Me!
The Power of the Gospel is able to overcome the sin nature.
The Power of the Gospel delivers us from lost-ness, from the wrath of God, from willful spiritual ignorance, from evil self-indulgence, and from the darkness of false religion.
The Gospel Changes Me!
“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
In the Gospel we see the holiness of God—God allows us to see Him by faith.
And when a person is in the presence of God—they are changed!
The Gospel Changes Me!
The Gospel Changes Me!
Faith in, complete trust in God (a faith from start to finish) opens the door for transformation.
By faith, we experience the sanctifying work of God. We are no longer the same! God changes us!
